THE ROCK ALL-STARS: The Rock All-Stars stepped out in force again on Sunday morning last…a little rain couldn’t dampen the high spirits shown by all. With the various stations set up and in place, everyone joined in to do an enthusiastic warm-up. Tim Mc was teaching ball skills….bouncing, throwing in the air and catching, skills at which Fionn, Aislinn and Lily were mighty.

Penalty kicks were then taken….Millie and Thomas were amazingly skilful. Lily and Caoimhe were dingers at the obstacle course….going through the tunnel, jumping through hoops and zigzagging as if they were on the slopes of the Austrian Alps. Jamie and Julian loved the parachute with the gorgeous colours flying high in the sky. It was wonderful to see old faces and new….all enjoying the experiences….lifetime friendships being forged at the grass roots.

Please join us again on Sunday morning next at 10am at the Austin Stack Club pitch in Connolly Park. The All-Stars initiative is open to all children, boys and girls, with a diagnosis. Táimid ag fás agus ag forbairt! Fáilte roimh chách. Eolas/information: please contact Sarah (087-281 0239) or Sandra (087-294 6658).

SCÉAL NA FÉILE (FAOI 15): Our boys took on the best U15 club sides in the world last Saturday when we participated in Féile na nÓg 2022 in Dublin. We took our place in Division 1 expecting to qualify for the knockout cup stages against the premier clubs. We were hosted by St.Peters in Ballyboughal, in North County Dublin.

We travelled there from Maynooth University Campus where we had stayed overnight in order to give our side the best possible chance of success. In our opening game we played our hosts, Club Naomh Peadar. We started slowly in that game but managed to get two crucial goals to settle our nerves and we were ahead at half time…2-3 to 0-3. We got into our stride in the second half, scoring three more goals to secure an emphatic victory with a scoreline of 5-7 to 0-7.

Our second match was against New York and it was played almost immediately after our opener. The Big Apple boys proved worthy opponents scoring 0-4 in the first half against our 1-2. With a much better second half performance we stretched our lead and a stonewall shut out by our backs prevented New York from adding to their tally. We won on a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-4, thereby securing a semi-final placing.

After a well-deserved lunch break, during which our boys had an opportunity to replenish their energy as well as soaking up the carnival atmosphere, we challenged a staunch Bredagh team from the outskirts of Belfast and the champions of County Down. A strong start had us leading by 0-5 at half time….2-1 to 0-2….and a further two goals in the second half ensured that we were worthy victors….4-3 to 0-4.

The highlight of that encounter was a brilliant team movement that ended when Gavin Casey found an alert Cormac Bastible with surgical precision and Cormac, producing a sublime finish, despatched a raspar to the Northern net. We then travelled to Abbotstown to play our Division 1 Cup Final against Galway champions, Claregalway, who also had an unbeaten run to the Division 1 Cup final. We began the first half well with the lion’s share of possession and were leading by a mere two points close to half time when a speculative shot from our opponents led to a fortuitous goal that, unfortunately, left us down by a point at half-time.

We had our own goal chance immediately after half-time but a great save by the opposition’s goalie kept out the leather. Claregalway then had their own attack on our goal which was well blocked by our defence but the rebound fell into opposition hands and was finished to the net from point blank range. Tireless efforts from our hardworking midfielders and forwards produced a comeback but, unfortunately, our train was derailed by another deflected Claregalway goal.

We managed to bring the margin back to five points but ran out of time and lost on a final scoreline of 3-2 to 0-6. Sad? Yes, but very happy with our overall displays at Féile 2022! Our U15s played their games with heart, spirit, courage and skill. They showed to all that the boys of The Rock are among the best! They gave every ounce of their energy in that final game in Abbotstown.

They had a wonderful weekend and the experience will certainly stand to them. We look forward to seeing these lads wearing the Black‘n’Amber in future games.

Congratulations to worthy winners, Baile Chláir na Gaillimhe.
