FAOI 13/14:

Last Wednesday evening our Under 14 A Boys capped off an impeccable season by winning their fourth trophy of the season! They claimed the Coiste na nÓg Town League Title with a fine victory over Churchill at Connolly Park…6-13 to 2-13. Donagh McMahon headed up a strong panel that showed tremendous discipline and composure when most needed. One of the outstanding memories is the performance of Seán Carmody who chipped in a remarkable hat trick from midfield.

Colm Mangan presented the Cup to our captain, Donagh Mac Mathúna, who gave a fine speech. Comhghairdeachas to team and mentors. These lads can now enjoy a well deserved break for a few weeks before they begin their preparations for next year’s Under 16 season. An Charraig go deo! (ii) Meanwhile, in Strand Road, the Under 14 Development squad played a game of two halves against The Blues in the Division 3 last round game. Down 3-12 to 0-3 at half time, it looked ‘done and dusted’ but the young Rockies took advantage of the break to reorganise.

The second half was a revelation as The Rock team took over and overcame the 18 point deficit to draw the game…3-17 to 5-11!! Dochreidthe! James O’Donoghue would have been proud of the coolness with which Tom O’Farrell scored the equalising point! It has to be said, however, that this was a fantastic team effort! Those who left at half time were the only losers on the night!

Division 3 semi-final:

Austin Stack Club B boys v Ballymac @ 6.30pm on Wednesday 24th. It will be close! (iv) At the club grounds in Connolly Park, and in glorious sunshine (buíochas le Dia), an extremely impressive Salthill/Cnoc na Cathrach team (Galway) were crowned 2014 Lee Strand Under 13 Champions on Sunday last. A power-packed display gave them a victory over our own gallant boys from The Rock…5-13 to 1-7. (Half time: 2-5 to 0-5).

Congratulations to the excellently drilled Tribesmen who exacted a revenge of sorts from the corresponding fixture two short years ago. Our own campaign was not without distinction as the team has improved considerably over the past few weeks and won all their three group games on the Saturday as well as their best showing in the semi-final v Cuala Kickhams (Dublin).

The scores were as follows:- Round 1: AdeS 5-8; Legion (Killarney) 1-5; Round 2: AdeS 2-4; Ennistymon (Clare) 0-4; Round 3: AdeS 1-5; Ballyboden/St Enda’s (Dublin) 0-2; semi-final: AdeS 1-9; Cuala Kickhams (Dublin) 0-2.

This achievement of emerging unbeaten was put in context as this group produced three finalists for the Cup, Shield and Plate competitions, as well as 2 competition winners in Ennistymon (Shield) and Legion (Plate). Despite the disappointment of losing the final, the lads have every reason to hold their heads high and the future is very bright indeed for this fast developing unit.

An painéal: David Oba, Craig Ó Tíocháin, Danny Draghici, David Burke, Pádhraic Linnane, Dara Barry-Walsh, Eoghan Carroll, Seán Quilter, Leon Sholamba, Jordan Barry, Liam Nolan, Adam Curran, James Fernane, Conor Myers, Joe Bastible, Tom O’Farrell, Jordan Kissane, Cian Purcell, Luke Chester, Daniel Breen, Greg Scanlon, Niall Fitzmaurice, Ben Quilter. Mentors: Eamon Linnane, Dave Scanlon, Wayne Guthrie, Paudie McQuinn, Gene O’Donnell.

A big ‘thank you’ to our sponsors BARRY’S BAKERY and special mention to Mike Lynch, Dinny O’Connor and all who worked as part of the committee in running an excellent 29th Tournament. And last, but not least, special ‘buíochas mór’ to Jerry O’Dwyer and his LEE STRAND team…they have stood by this competition for all these years…a great example of local support at its best!
