FAOI 15/16: Our under 15/16 footballers had a great season in 2019 and eagerly looked forward to continuing this season with more outstanding performances! The Víreas Coróineach has merely delayed our activities! Let’s recall a few highlights from the past year or so. (i) We remember the fine showing by our representatives on The Green panel in the Taft Cup (Faoi 15) games. The Rock players: Ben Quilter, Luke Chester, Armin Heinrich, Niall Fitzmaurice, Cian Purcell, Jordan Kissane, Owen Healy, Conor Horan, Jack Savage, Greg Scanlan were a very vital part of The Green team. (ii) Our 26-strong panel won the laurels in the U16 COUNTY League (Roinn 1) final v Killarney Legion i bPáirc Aibhistín de Staic. What a memory! This was certainly a highlight of the season! Having battled hard in the semi-final, we faced the boys from the Little Oak Wood (Doirín) and we were overjoyed, after a hard battle, to be crowned County League champions. Legion had the gale force breeze at their backs in the first half of the game and we were down…0-1 to 0-5…ag am sosa. The sole point was scored by our inspirational full-back Ruairí O’Connell. The second half was only seconds old when a fantastic move ended with a stunning goal by Josh Lynch and that gave us the inspiration we needed. Some great football followed. 1-1 was scored by Jordan Kissane and that edged us into a well-deserved lead. Donnacha Sayers and Noah Townsend also chipped in. Conor Horan and Shane Bastible followed with 0-2 and then Legion added 0-2 of their own. When the final whistle blew we were winners of the 2019 County League. Scór deireanach: 2-8 to 0-8. The stars who won the day: Ben Quilter; Donncha Fox, Ruairí O’Connell, Jack Murphy; John Feely, Joey Nagle, Evan Foley; Dean Rusk, Josh Lynch; Gavin Slattery, Shane Bastible, Conor Horan; Donncha Sayers, Jordan Kissane, James Charles; Brian McElligott, Gearóid Kilgallen, Enda Cahill, Seán Collins, Colm Browne, Darragh Moriarty, Jack Doyle, Noah Townsend, Kevin Barry, John Duggan, Simon Carey. (iii) Our lads were invited to partake in the inaugural Niall McGillicuddy Tournament at the Legion Club in Doirín. Indeed, we enjoyed a great day out at a very special and well-run sporting event. We qualified for the shield semi-final having played with an experimental team….Joey Nagle was tried in the full-forward position and got two exceptional scores and Jordan Kissane excelled at full-back! Our daring mentors weren’t afraid to experiment! An fhoireann bhuacach: Gavin Slattery, Evan Foley, Conor Horan, Joey Nagle, Darragh Moriarty, Enda Cahill, Ruairí O’Connell, Donnacha Fox, John Feely, Shane Bastible, Kevin Barry, Jordan Kissane. Bhí trí bhua iontacha acu v Corcaigh, Luimneach agus Port Láirge. (vi) In June, we saw great displays of fantastic football by our Rock U15s in the Munster SuperTouch Tournament in Connolly Park. Wonderful football was played by all involved and valuable experiemce was gained! They were/are a credit to the club. Agus mar fhocal scoir: we can’t wait to dance on the sod of Connolly! Let’s hope that we’ll soon be allowed in to kick leather as it was never kicked before! Picture the ‘O’Neill’s’ sailing high over the bar! See the ball curling into the top corner of the net! Watch a ‘keeper in full stretch as he tips the ‘pigskin’ ‘round the upright! And all wearing the Black’n’Amber! Keep up the fitness, keep up the running and keep working on your skills! We look forward to seeing what preparations have been going on in our ‘closed’ Cruaghoirt! Maybe, a surprise awaits! Cá bhfios?
