ASHE STREET has undergone a bit of a renaissance of late and that continues with announcement of a series of seasonal one day street festivals, the first of which happens on Saturday, November 19.

The first Winter event will celebrate the season that is upon us with street entertainment, discounts and special offers across a range of shops and eateries on the street.

“The area has great choice and offers a unique experience for visitors and for locals,” said Deirdre Enright at Craft Makers Centre.

“We encourage everyone to visit the street on the day to avail of promotions, discounts and special offers right across the Ashe Street Quarter. Special offers can be had in the following premises on the day,” added Deirdre.

An area of significant cultural and historical value, Ashe Street has undergone a cool rebirth in recent years. It is now home to a great number of independently-owned small businesses offering shopping, dining, entertaining and professional services experiences to the town of Tralee.

The Craft Makers Centre has organised poetry and rhyming entertainment for 3-8 year olds at 10.30am on the 19 as well as an opportunity to have jewellery by Alison Walsh and screen prints by Edel Wilson commissioned for Christmas in their centre on the corner of Ashe Street.

Watch out for mime artists, candle makers and card trick entertainers while street artists will be at work on art pieces across the street throughout the day. At 2pm a Dog Show has been organised by The Pet Obsession with all monies raised going to Animal Help Net.

BACK in 1966, RTE broadcasted ‘Discovery In Tralee’ which showed off the town’s advances into modern living as it was at the time.

Thanks to the RTE Archives website, we can sample the sights and sound of what the likes of The Mall and St Brendan’s Park were like 50 years ago.

Cameras also pay a visit to the Presentation Convent and the the old Technical College (now Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí), which, obviously, has not changed a whole lot since. ‘Discovery in Tralee’ went out on RTE One at 7:15pm, October 13, 1966.

The show highlighted the towns agricultural past and how it had been industrialised with the factories that sprang up around the place and brought some prosperity. Watch the footage HERE

AROUND 150 people made their way to Siamsa Tire on Wednesday night for the first screening of feature film ‘CON’.

‘CON’ was shot in Tralee over the summer and written and directed by Tralee filmmaker, Bertie Brosnan. He also played the lead part in the movie, which which was filmed in a documentary style.

Along with the first screening of ‘CON’, which was Brosnan’s first shot at a feature length film, a Q&A was held after for the audience.

This was the first time the film was shown to an audience and was received well by those who watched. Next up, Bertie is hoping to take ‘CON’ on the road to film festivals around the country and perhaps even further afield. Scroll down for photos…

Paul Geaney Is Kerry’s Only All-Star, But Was There A Strong Case For Shane Enright?

CBS New Insert

Shane Enright.

WITH the Championship now far behind us and the clocks turned back, the All Stars provide the last bit of inter-county intrigue before the long, dark winter nights.

The All-Stars nominees are selected by GAA journalists and then voted on by players, but as is the subjective nature of the whole thing everyone has their own team and there is often a few gripes about the final selection.

Continued below…

Kerry ETB Insert 1
.

Kerry picked up just the one All-Star as, Paul Geaney, who was taken off in the dying minutes of the All-Ireland semi-final (a decision much-mulled over) picked up an All-Star.

The Dingle man and three other players were up for an award; Killian Young and Paul Murphy had an outside chance, but Shane Enright was in there with a good shout.

As ever, the two finalists dominate the selection and seeing as this year’s champions were crowned after a replay the chances of a Dublin or Mayo player picking up even more All-Stars were increased even further.

Enright who won an All-Star in 2015 was in competition in the full-back line where Dubs, Johnny Cooper and Philly McMahon were almost shoe-ins, so this left a toss up at at right-corner back with the newcomer from Mayo, Brendan Harrison.

Continued below…

Queens Speech
.

Both Harrison and the Tarbert defender were deployed to do a man-marking job on Dublin’s Bernard Brogan. In Kerry’s semi-final Enright kept Brogan to just 0-2 from play and was rightly lauded for his performance. Harrison, on the other hand, left the former player-of-the-year scoreless. Brogan was also dropped to the bench for the replay.

There is of course a lot of variables involved between the head-to-heads, the drawn All-Ireland Final was not a day for forwards while the free-scoring semi-final made it a tougher task for the men in the backline.

The route to that Dublin showdown made it more difficult for a Kerryman to pick up an All-Star, three matches against two Division 3 sides was not going to impress the judging panel and players from around the country.

Some years are more difficult than others when it comes to selecting an All-Star team and this year – due to the nature of the championship which did not capture people’s imagination until the Kerry v Dublin and the two epic finals – was a tougher one still.

Kerry third team completed a remarkable double taking the Munster Minor Shield and the Munster Division Two Trophy. The unique Oyster Oval is believed to be the only cricket ground along the 2,500k Wild Atlantic Way.

OVER the past week there have been reports of a door to door scam that began in the Fenit area and over the weekend was experienced by some residents in the Ballinorig area.

Kerry Badminton Association News

James Flaherty of Moyvane Badminton Club, who took part in the Irish Individual Graded C Championships in Baldoyle, Dublin on Sunday 30th October and just lost out in the final, well done James on a great start to the season.

Badminton clubs within the confines of the County of Kerry have over the past 6 weeks or so have been setting out their stalls in preparation for a new season with many clubs reporting an increase of membership for the season ahead.

The Kerry competitive season commences this coming weekend which, incidentally marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Kerry Badminton Association on November 4th 1936.
Once again it is a juvenile programme that commences the new season with the annual tournaments for all age groups which will take place in the Killarney Sports Centre on Saturday next November 5th to commence at 11 am. As a massive entry is forecast for these events all players are requested to check in not later than 10.45 am
The adults will line out the following day November 6 th in the same venue where the annual Knock Out Cup competitions will take place. These cater for divisions 3/4/5 and if it is anything like last year a huge entry can be expected with teams from all corners of the County.
The All Ireland individual championships for Grades C and H were played in Dublin last weekend and what a great performance was given by one of the several Kerry competitors who travelled for these championships. The player in question was Moyvane teenager James O’Flaherty who gave a top class display to reach the Grade C singles final but the brave Kerryman had to succumb to Alan Conlan of the Dublin Mount Pleasant Club in two hard fought sets but it was indeed a vintage display of badminton by O’Flaherty in what was a top class field.
Indeed O’Flaherty’s younger sister Niamh also put up a good show when reaching the semi final in the ladies singles Grade C championships event.
The draws for the Ladies and Mens leagues for divisions leagues, which are once again kindly sponsored by Speedy’s Bar , Moyvane, have now been despatched to all clubs. All players and fixtures secretaries are earnestly requested to adhere to the time table as set on the draw sheet.

REPORTS ;
(U12) SFAI Sketchers Cup 3rd Round: Park Fc 2-0 Pike Rovers

Superb Display by the Park 12s as they start to Peak now as a squad, a tough home draw v Pike Rovers, one of the top teams in Limerick District league.

The game didn’t disappoint in physical but fair battle with the Parks Lads largely dominating in a tense affair with 2 strikes from Dara sending the Park into the fourth round to loud cheers from the Home crowd!!!

The park couldn’t have asked for a better dream start as Dara’s bullet header from Callum’s corner was too powerful for the Goalie to keep out, 3 mins in Park 1-0 up. The park kept pressing against a strong pike defence and continued to create chances despite playing into a strong swirling breeze, which Pike seemed to get to grip with , as a lot of the shots going too long which was easy pickings for Richie in goal for the Park.

On the 20 mins mark, Dara hit the net again after the keeper spilled the ball but it was disallowed for interference from the other front man Jamie O S.

It was tit for tat up to the halftime whistle. Halftime score line 1-0.

The 2nd half and the Park seemed to deal with the wind a lot better than the visitors did in the 1st half, and started to pile on the pressure corner after corner, pinpoint deliveries by Damian but the Park couldn’t seem to breech the Pike Defence, chances from Jamie W, Jack, Obina went a begging, with Damian unlucky not to hit the roof of the net from a superb free kick only to be denied by the keeper. 15 mins to go and the visitors started to get on top creating a tense final quarter for the Park, a couple of changes and switches by the management and 7 mins from the time and Dara struck again this time with a left footer into the corner 2-0 and the life was drained out of the visitors but fair play they kept battling to the end. Final score 2-0 to the Park .

This was a massive scalp to take against one of the top teams of the Limerick District League. Superb squad performance from one to 15 who fought as a team. Well done lads the 4th Round Beckons with another mighty battle ahead away to Aisling Annacotty!!! No Fear!!!

Players of Note:  Odhran, Adam, Jamie O S, Luke, Dara, Michael, Damian

Man of the Match: Obina Izahi– controlled the back line, superb defending, physical but fair in the tackle, cleared his lines well cool under pressure.

Squad on the Day: Richie Healy, Ewan O Sullivan, Obina Izahi, Luke Casey, Ray McGrath, Cian O Gara, Dara Cunnane, Jamie Williams, Jack Slattery. Odhran Ferris, Adam McDonagh, Callum o Sullivan, Jamie o Shea, Damian Hogan, Michael Tansley .

(U17) FAI Cup 2nd Round ; Park Fc 2-3 Avenue Utd , AET

The game got under way with Park on the attack Shane puts a ball over the top to Adam who shoots but the keeper saves . The game quickly flows from end to end and Shane passes to Conor who puts it through to Aaron but the keeper again saves his shot.

Culan runs down the wing and passes to John but his shot goes wide. Avenue get a free kick outside the box and it breaks in the six yard box for a forward to slot it into the net 0-1 Avenue Utd with their first chance. Park start to come forward again and Culan passes to John who flicks onto Conor but the Avenue keeper is in great form and saves his shot. Park get a free kick about 5yards outside the box and Shane takes it which flies into the top right hand corner of the net to make it 1-1.at half time.

Second half gets underway Dean passes to Adam who puts it through to Conor but his shot goes wide . Jack passes out to Josh who puts the ball through to Culan onto John but his shot misses the target. Avenue get the ball down the wing the forward rounds two players crosses the ball across the box to the incoming player and puts the ball over the park defender into the net to make it 1-2 Avenue Utd.

Park now need to raise their game Kevin puts a ball through to Aaron but his shot goes just over the crossbar. Park get a free kick but Shane heads it over the bar , Jack puts the ball through to John who slots it to David he runs forward and slots it into the net past the advancing keeper to make it 2-2 full-time.

Extra time begins and park have to keep their composure and mount several attacks but the sadly they come to nothing . Avenue get a corner Which Shane heads it out to Mirlind who puts it forward to Aaron but once again the keeper saves his shot. Avenue get a free kick outside the box and although Park contest it ,the ball manages to hit of one of their players and finds its way to the back of the net 2-3 Avenue Utd.  Park  have several more chances and just in the dying seconds from a corner which comes in high but Adam heads over the bar  to make the final score 2-3 after extra time.

Every player on the Park team gave 100? and we couldn’t have asked any more of them they played well against a strong Avenue Utd side and on another day the chances would have gone in but well played lads your a credit to your club . We know your disheartened but now we have to get on with the job of trying to win the league.

The highlight of the day was a great goal from Jack Daly scoring from his own box with a monster of a shot. Better than Beckham!

Thanks to LB Rovers for coming in to play us and thanks to the Park FC officials for all the hard work in getting 6 pitches ready for the blitz.

Players born in 2008 & 2009 can play  out of season soccer on Saturdays throughout the winter on the Astro, kick off 11.50, finishes at 1pm. Parents can email the players name and a contact phone number to the coaches at satsoccer1@yahoo.com .

FAOI 15
We travelled to Castleisland to take part in U15 super touch competition run by the County Board for the Castleisland District Clubs. On the day only Ballymac & Castleisland Desmonds took part in the competition. The game was played in wonderful sunshine with Ballymac getting off to a great start and racing into a six-point lead. Castleisland got moving at this stage and by half time they were leading by one point. The second half was a real cracker with both teams matching each other for scores. With one minute gone in injury time Ballymac got the equalising point to force extra time. Things didn’t go our way in extra time against a much physically stronger Desmond’s team who ran out convincing winners.  We would like to wish Brian Cassidy a speedy recovery after picking up an injury on the day. Thanks also to Micheal Quirke for organising this competition and to all the players who attended, and our selectors Stephen O’ Brien, Jack Culloty & Jer Lynch
FAOI 10
Our final session of the year took place last Sunday the 30th of October when we welcomed Glanmire, Cork and Kerins O’Rahilly’s to Ballymac for challenge games. We had great games on the day and we would like to thanks both our visiting clubs. A great way to conclude the season. On behalf of the committee of Ballymac Coiste Na n’Og many thanks to all the parents and players for making 2016 a great year for both the boys and girls clubs.
TRALEE CBS U15 TEAM
Well done to Ballymac players Dylan Dunne Moriarty, Daragh Leen and Daragh Broderick who were part of the Tralee CBS Squad which qualified for the U15 Munster Colleges A Final with a victory over Rochestown College.  They now face old rivals St. Brendans Killarney in the Final due to be played in mid November.
CAILINI FAOI 16 YEAR REVIEW

We completed in Div 4 of the Co League & Div 3 of North Kerry Board competitions , due to Aisling O Connells involvement with the Kerry U14s her participation with our U16 team was curtailed till late in the year .

6th April
We kicked off with a home game v Glenflesk  and came out on top on an unusual scoreline of 4-1 to 3-1, Ellie Mc Elligott getting a hat trick on the night .

11th April
Away to Moyvane we drew 1-3 to 0-6 , Cait Rice getting our goal on the night , Micheala Murphy  & Rachel Godley getting our points

28th April
At home v Abbeydorney won 2-8 to 2-3 , a win that was long overdue . The clubs first competitive victory over Abbeydorney was really enjoyed by players & management. Michaela Murphy & Rose Anne O Shea goal scorers on the night . Mary Healy & Aine Rice played well on the night .

11th May
Away to Duagh lost 3-12 to 2-6 , missing a few regulars we went down to a much stronger and determined Duagh team.

Kerins O Rahillys failed to field a team for our final group game so we got the points ensuring that we qualified for a semi final spot with home venue
The semi final was played after the exams & summer break on the 4th August , during the summer we gained 2 new players in Lucy Murphy & Maeve Pierce who were welcome and valued additions however they were on holidays for the semi final . We trained regularly during the summer in preparation for the semi final v Duagh however on the day we failed to perform half time had us down 2-4 to 0-2 . An improved 2nd half saw us score 2-2 but went down 2-4 to 4-5.

North Kerry Board div 3
2nd Sept
V Dingle /Castlegregory  1-8 to 2-7 , a really good game of football against a div 3 co league team . Niamh & Aisling played very well midfield , Lucy & Maeve Pierce showed their value to the team , Tara & Micheala played well in defence on the night , failure to convert all our chances cost us
11th Sept

Away to KOR an easy 2-12 to 1-2 followed & we had qualified for the Shield final against Duagh again with Dingle /Caastlegregory v Moyvane qualifying for the League Final
26th Sept
Again we faced Duagh at home in Ballymac and this time we really put it up to them , the girls put in a brilliant performance on the night & were very unlucky to lose 4-8 to 4-6 .Panel : Robyn White , Tara Murphy , Claire Kenny ,Michela Murphy ,Caoimhe Carroll , Leah O Neill , Rose Anne O Shea , Maeve O Sullivan , Aisling O Connell , Niamh Rahilly , Maeve Pierce , Aine Rice , Mary Healy ,Lucy Murphy , Therese Keane , Rachel Godley ,Heather Jones ,Emily O Donoghue , Lisa Curran ,Elle Mc Elligott , Cait Rice , Eve Creedon & Elle Sugrue

A panel of 23 was a fantastic turnout , this group are the trailblazers for Ballymac Ladies Club and they are a great bunch of girls to work with . Great attitude , they get loads of knock backs but they keep turning up very willingly to put that blue jersey on . With 10 of this team moving onto senior football we hope to create more history for the ladies club by fielding a first ever Senior Ladies team in the KLGFA co league & junior championship in 2017 . Training has begun already with the response has been very positive . Terence O Connor is doing core & fitness sessions every Sunday at 6.30pm to 7.30 pm for this group , this will continue till December & the plan is to begin again in Feb 2017 . Anybody interested in playing or helping out the ladies club in 2017 can call Donal Rahilly on 087 6173912 , Anthony Curran 0872713507 , James Godley 087 6174145 or Teddy Murphy 0879556342

To facilitate further work being carried out on the small alley it will be completely closed from Monday  November 7th until Sunday November 13th.
We regret any inconvenience this short closed period will cause but it will result in better overall conditions in the alley.

The Club extends its sympathy to the family of the late Mary Reidy of Kilmore, Kielduff on their recent bereavement.  Marys grandsons Eanna and Micheal Reidy are part of our Senior panel.

KERRY footballer and garda, Aidan O’Mahony, grabbed the only goal in a 1-0 victory in the Mary Kate Healy Memorial Soccer Match between local members of Garda Síochána and staff at the Bon Secours Hospital.

The match was played in good sprits at a fresh KDL on Saturday night with all funds raised going to Our Ladys Children’s Hospital Crumlin.

The match honours the memory of little Mary Kate Healy who sadly passed away a year after her first birthday in 2007. Mary Kate was diagnosed with a liver disease called biliary atresia, she spent about a year of her life travelling up and down to Crumlin for treatment.

Fundraising events have been held over the years in Mary Kate’s memory, including an annual walk. The Bons were the holders of the cup but had to hand it back over to the gardaí once more because O’Mahony’s decider.

PHOTOS/REPORT: Gallant Glenbeigh/Glencar Too Hot For Na Gaeil To Handle In Junior Decider

Gavin O’Connor was in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney, on Sunday afternoon to see the Glenbeigh/Glencar beat Na Gaeil in the replay of the Castleisland Mart Junior Premier County Final…

THERE is to be no fairytale championship run for Na Gaeil who were beaten by Glenbeigh/Glencar in the replay of the Kerry Junior Premier Championship played at a sunny Fitzgerald Stadium.

Na Gaeil could not recover from a dreadful first quarter which saw Glenbeigh/Glencar race into a 1-5 to 0-0 lead. Kieran Courtney bagged the only goal of the match in the tenth minute.

.

The goal came after Na Gaeil’s Rory O’Connor saved a rasping shot from Darran O’Sullivan only for Courtney to scrape the ball home from the rebound inside the small square.

The decision to put Jack Barry in at full-forward at the start of the game did not pay off. The former Kerry U21 was effectively out of the game when his side badly needed him around the middle.

Eventually he was moved back into the centre where he would go on to win more than his fair share of ball, but the damage was done.

Performing excellently for the Mid-Kerry side was Darran O’Sullivan who chipped in with four points and was pulling the strings for his side in the forward line.

In the defence Pa Kilkenny gave an assured performance showing he could posssibly sneak back into favour with the Kerry senior panel again.

Na Gaeil were wasteful in attack. They kicked six wides to Glenbeigh/Glencar’s one in the first half which ended with them in front 1-10 to 0-5 at the break.

The Tralee side were misfiring in front of goal and needed some inspiration. It came from centre forward Ian McCarthy who kicked four well taken points, three of them in the second half.

But he was the only one of his fellow forwards who had his radar dialled-in this afternoon.

The closest Na Gaeil came was within six points and in truth they never really looked like they were going to pull this one out of the fire. Despite having the better share of possession from the first quarter, that eight point head start they gave to Glenbeigh/Glencar was just too much to reel in.

The game ended with the Mid Kerry side emptying their bench and in cruise control with Na Gaeil hoping to engineer a goal opportunity that would never come.

Glenbeigh/Glencar will face the Waterford champions next and considering the recent record of Kerry teams in the All-Ireland Junior Club Championship, they will fancy their chances of going all the way to Croke Park.

PREVIEW: Na Gaeil To Take Second Tilt At Junior Crown

THERE is a chance for both sides to reset the clock after the arduous drawn final two weeks ago, which was slog for players and those in the stand and terraces.

Despite playing with two extra men for the final 20 minutes, wing back David Culloty’s 40 yard point rescued a draw for Na Gaeil with the final kick of the match.

The final was played in gruelling weather and the football matched the difficult conditions. Either side couldn’t say they played anywhere near their best so will be out to prove their quality. Let’s hope the weather doesn’t ruin the occasion this time.

Brogue Xmas Parties
.

Na Gaeil will be hoping for a lot more from their forwards who were heavily reliant on Darragh Carmody. Glenbeigh/Glencar will be without suspended forwards, Tommy Cahill and Stephen O’Sullivan, who received their marching orders.

This will add extra burden to the side’s key men, Gavin O’Grady and Darran O’Sullivan especially who showed flashes of what he’s capable of last time out.

The two Barry brothers, Jack and Andrew, drifted in and out of that game, so the Tralee side will be hoping for a lot more from them, as well as Mike Griffin, who failed to rip up Glenbeigh/Glencar as he has done to teams on the road to the final.

Despite Na Gaeil operating in Division 4 and their Mid Kerry opponents in Division 1 of the County League, there is no gulf in quality between both sides. If Na Gaeil’s main men can come good, that could be enough to sneak it.

Verdict – Na Gaeil by 1

COLLEAGUES of Marc Ó Sé at CBS The Green threw a surprise party for him on Friday to say thanks for his 14 years of service to the Kerry senior football team.

“I have been very lucky that they have been very supportive down through the years,” said Marc who began teaching in The Green back in 2004, the year he picked up his first of his five senior All-Ireland medals.

“It’s very hard to play football at a high level and work as well at the same time, but when you have the support that I enjoyed it makes it a lot easier. I’d like to thank them for everything they’ve done for me,” said Marc, whose partner Ellen is also a teacher at the school.

“That’s when it’s going to be hard, watching them play and not playing that’s when it will hit home. But look, I’m a supporter now so I’ll go up as supporter next year and I look forward to seeing them play. I’ll play a bit of golf as well maybe, there are exciting times ahead and I have my small little man who’s only a few months old, so he’ll take up a lot of time himself,” said Marc.

The Irish and History teacher is in charge of The Green football team this year but is looking no further than that as a coach.”I’ll play football with An Ghaeltacht for the next few years so hopefully that will keep me busy,” said Marc.

IT WAS a special day in Blennerville National School on Thursday when a pupil got her lovely locks chopped for charity.

Third class pupil, Kayla O’Connor, from Curraheen, decided during the summer that she would donate some of her hair to the Little Princess cancer charity and today was the big day.

Special needs assistant at the school and hairdresser, Anne Marie Scott, was chosen to cut Kayla’s locks which she did in front of the junior classes whose eyes were transfixed by the spectacle.

Kayla’s eyes lit up as soon as she saw the cut plaits in her hands – she achieved what she set out to do.

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs to boys and girls across Ireland and the UK that have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment. Buckets were on hand also on the day to donate to the charity.

The idea came to Kayla while she was in the hairdressers with her grandmother Liz O’Connor who, as it happens, is also her third class teacher. Watching on also was mom, Niamh O’Connor who couldn’t be more proud of her little girl and her great deed. Scroll down for photos…
