Under 14 Girls

Our under 14 ladies travelled to Abbeydorney on Wednesday evening last to play the locals in the replay of the NKL Div 1 . Under the lights and with great support for both sides the game did not disappoint. It took normal time and two periods of extra time , a total of ninety minutes to separate the sides, with the last kick of the game to give the Abbeydorney girls the victory .

Being eight points down at halftime did not help our cause, but again our girls showed exceptional heart and determination to finish the game the stronger and level the game in the dying minutes with a goal from the boot of Alyssa Leen after a driving run from the centre of the field. An great shot giving the keeper no chance.

The first half saw Abbeydorney start with three goals in the first 10 minutes before our girls got to the pace of the game. Our opening score came from Emily O Donoghue followed by three from Cora Savage to steady the ship.

Abbeydorney tagged on another two goals and two points to widen the gap but a great goal from Ciara Palmer followed by a point from Cora left the halftime score  5-2 to 1-5.

With it all to do in the second-half Ballymac raised their game with a  goal each from Alyssa  and Emily O Donoghue. Cora chipped in with another point to narrow the gap all of a sudden to a point and turn the game on its head again.

It was like heavy weight bout for the last fifteen minutes with both teams trading majors with Sinead Mc Keown , Alyssa and Emily O Donoghue scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled in the square. Abbeydorney replied with two goals of their own with one from the penalty spot, directly after we scoring from the spot, a decision which  frustrated our girls no end. It was after this Alyssa struck for the equalizing goal to level the game.

With both teams suffering fatigue , ten minutes a half of extra time was played with both sides scoring 1-1 , our scores coming in the first period from Cora and Emily O Donoghue and Abbeydorney scoring the same in the second period to leave it all square again.

This meant an additional period of five minutes per half to be played and with our girls trying gallantly , fatigue set in with Cora having to retire with cramp and Abbeydorney able to call on a larger panel and fresh legs laid laid siege on our goals for the final five minutes .

Despite defending bravely the golden score came after a hop ball was won by Abbeydorney from a third player claiming the ball and subsequently firing the ball over the bar to the huge disappointment of our girls, mentors and supporters.

The ref blew the final whistle and the bare minimum separated the sides, after one hundred and sixty minutes of football. This was the end of a titanic battle between two outstanding footballing sides.

Really there was no losers on the night and Our under fourteen girls can take great pride in how they performed against a very formidable club in Abbeydorney which has the pick of players from nearly half of North Kerry. Well done to all involved especially each and everyone of the team who played their hearts out.
