FAOI 10 Annual Review

Following a well-deserved break for children, coaches, and parents our Sunday morning academy returned on the 12th of March.

The under 10 boy’s panel for 2017 consisted of 35 players who all got game time throughout the year. There was a great turnout at academy training sessions on Sunday mornings which was very encouraging for the coaches.

As the year progressed the introduction of go-games and challenge games allowed the boys to get competitive, and they really enjoyed the experience of a playing against other clubs. Our first competitive outing was in the annual County U10 Go Games Blitz in splendid weather conditions at the John Mitchels Complex on the 31st March.

Being restricted to 9 a side Ballymac fielded a team from the oldest age group of players, playing 3 games within the hour.

Ballymac competed extremely well in all games and were never out played in what were 3 fantastic games with a high level of skill and sportsmanship on display. Our U10’s had their first outing in the U10 Go Games on Wednesday the 17th of May.

We fielded three teams on the night and had very good games. We had further Go Games Blitzes over the following four weeks which were hosted by the various clubs involved. Ballymac entered an U10 team (U10 on 31st of July) to play in the community games last bank holiday Monday.

The games were played in Connolly Park and the boys performed very well on a difficult day for football. We played Ardfert/Kilmoyley in our First game and the boys won on a score line of 3-03 to 2-03. In our next match, we played against Rock St/Caherslee.

We played very well in this game to win on a score line of 6-05 to 0-02. Our final game was against Spa Fenit Barrow and this was a very close game at half time with the score line being 0-01 to 0-01.

However, in the second half Spa/Fenit/Barrow scored a few quick goals and they ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 3-04 to 0-02. Our boys performed very well and many of this young team are eligible to play next year.

Our Academy continued on Sunday the 08th of June as we welcomed Firies for challenge games. The games were very enjoyable for the boys on a morning which was difficult for good football due to the rain. We entered 2 teams in the Milltown/Castlemaine Blitz which took place in August in aid of the Anthony Morris Fight Lyme Disease Fund.

We travelled to Laune Rangers on the 10th of September for challenge games and had very enjoyable games. We competed in the Castleisland District U10 blitz in Knocknagoshel on Saturday the 07th of October. We entered one teams in the blitz.

Ballymac were in a league with Cordal, Knock/Brosna & Knocknagoshel. Ballymac had two league games against Knocknagoshel and Brosna, winning both of these which saw us qualify for the A final against Cordal.

It was Cordal who made the better start with some more physical players in the middle third. To their credit the Ballymac boys gave it their all and competed to the end but it was to be Cordal’s day as they went on to win the A final.

The following day Sunday the 08th of October we competed in the Siobhan Cotter memorial blitz in Churchill where our U7, U8, U9, and U10 boys were playing.

On the day we had games against Churchill, Austin Stacks, and John Mitchel’s. Our opponents on the day were Churchill, John Mitchel’s, and Austin Stacks. Our U10’s began with a game against Austin Stacks and came up short by seven points.

However, we played some good football in our next game to defeat John Mitchel’s. In our final game we played the hosts Churchill and this was a very competitive game which ended up in a draw.

Our U 9’s had three competitive games coming up with a hard fought win against Austin Stacks in their first game.

In our second game we drew with Churchill, and we saved our best football until last with an excellent victory over John Mitchel’s in a very competitive game. The final academy session of the year took place on Sunday the 16th of October as we welcomed Fossa to Ballymac.

David Clifford and our own Brian Lonergan presented the boys with their medals and this was a great way for the boys to end the season. In summary the U10 boy’s panel had a busy year with academy training, go-games, challenge games and blitzes.

They also competed in the U12C competitions and won three divisions which was very impressive. They competed very well at all these events and their skill development throughout the year was impressive.

Many thanks to team mentors Robbie Harris, Tony Silles, Michael Crossan, Liam Joy who looked after this bunch of players throughout the year. Roll on 2018.
