The big game next weekend is our Senior Men at Home to Gneeveguilla at 7.30pm. This is the penultimate round of this year’s County League and a very important game for our team. All support greatly appreciated.  We send our best wishes to the Squad and management team. Bailemhic Abú!!

Junior Team

Ballymac played their 3rd junior game on Friday last when they travelled to Blennerville to take on the home side. Ballymac, playing without some of their regulars had to fight hard to grind out a victory.

This was a good team effort with the older players, (Padraig, T.J. and Frank ) controlling matters and guiding the new younger players.

St. Pat’s were fast out of the blocks and were leading on a score line of 0.5 to 0.1 at the. first water break. The home side were in complete control and laid siege to the Ballymac goals.  Excellent defending by our full back of Ciaran Brosnan, T.J. Casey and Sean Savage kept us in touch . With limited amount of possession , Ballymac clawed their way back into the game and scored 1.3 to leave the scores level at half time.

Ballymac were the better team in the second half with Sean Horan kicking two points before the water break to St. Pat’s one point.

This left us with a point advantage leading into the last quarter.  Daragh Sweeney took control and drove forward at every chance.  For the last ten minutes Frank O Rahilly came back to help out in the defense and this move kept the home side at bay. Ballymac went on to score three more points , 1 each from Sean Horan, Brian Cassidy and James Carmody. The home side just managed 1.  This left the final score at Ballymac 1.8 , St. Pat’s 0.8.

Following the result of Friday (9/07/21) game. Ballymac are joint top with Churchil in Tralee/St Brendan’s Junior League !

With both scheduled to meet this Tuesday coming it  has  been decided to leave the game off. We go straight to the final.

The Final is fixed Tuesday 20th July @ 7:30pm.  How Great is that!! Our Junior Team in a Final. Good luck to the team and management.

Academy

What a treat our Academy kids had Sunday morning as part of the Morning of Fun for Rose.

They loved playing together with the giant Jenga, Twister and Connect Four, with some of the older players trying to enforce the rules of the games, semi-successfully!

The big wins of the day were the tug-of-war where we saw how well the kids are now working together in teams and the giant target practice where everyone got to practice their throws and kicks.

The Coaches are so impressed with how much our academy players have improved in a few short weeks. Not only have their ball skills improved but also their ability to concentrate and follow instructions. It’s a pleasure to watch them progress.

5th Game Phase 1 County Football Go Games 8th July

Our final game of Phase 1 saw us hosting old rivals Austin Stacks at home on another fine evening for football.

The game started at a blistering pace with end-to-end football and all the skills on display from both teams.

Both sets of defences were on top in the early exchanges.  We found it difficult to score, however, Patrick Leen, who has been a real goal threat in every game found the net to keep us in touch with Stacks who had scored a few early points and a goal from the impressive Danny Lane who was very well marshalled by our midfield dynamo, Daniel Moriarty who chipped in with a fine point just before the water break.  Stacks were on top after the water break and our full backs Harvey Leen and Gearoid Joy put in some fantastic tackles to prevent a number of certain scores. Gearoid Joy was a rock in defence all night and has really grown into this role. Meanwhile, Jack Lynch pulled off two brilliant saves to keep us in the game at half time.

We made a few changes at half time, to keep players fresh as we only had the bare 11 players and were playing a full-strength Stacks A team with their best u11s and u10s and plenty of subs being rolled on throughout the game.  Our boys came out fighting in the second half and outscored Stacks in this half thanks to some wonderful points from Patrick Leen and Adrian O’Connor, who took control of the midfield battle, followed by 2 goals, one from Patrick and another from Gearoid Joy.  The game continued at a frantic pace with great passing, blocking, tackling and scoring on display from both sides. Overall ,it was a fantastic game to watch between two evenly matched sides played in good spirits.

“Necessity is the mother of invention” is a well-known proverb and throughout Phase 1 some of our players have had to reinvent themselves from forwards to backs, and from midfielders to forwards as we don’t have the luxury of a subs bench.  Players like Eric Quirke, Ciaran Brosnan, Gearoid O’Connor, Jamie Harrington and Tadhg O’Connor have developed into versatile players who can play in a number of positions. There has been huge progress made since game 1 by this talented bunch of players who are a pleasure to coach and a credit to their families. The future is bright for these boys.

Thanks to the referee on the night, Kerry Hennessy. We look forward to Phase 2 which will commence on 22nd July.

Gold Team: 5th Game Phase 1 County Football Go Games 8th July V Austin Stacks.

On Thursday evening last Ballymac U11 gold team played their last game in phase 1 of the County League against Austin Stacks at home in Ballymac.

Again, we were delighted with the way training had gone during the week and we knew that the 15 lads were really looking forward to the game.

It was a brilliant evening for football. There was not a puff of a breeze and not a drop of rain. When Diarmuid Galvin, the referee, for the game threw in the ball, he started a whirlwind as Ballymac had 2 goals scored within four minutes of the start. Again, we continued from last week’s game with savage work rate from the lads all over the field our defence was limiting the stacks to only two points for the first half.

After the halftime break, we again as in the first half rattled off early scores to put the game out of reach for the stacks and started to take control all over the field with some brilliant goalkeeping by Darragh Leen. Outstanding defending from Blake, Keelan, Rory and David. While Gerard and Finn again were outstanding in the middle of the field. A special mention must go to our forwards on the night Aidan, Jack Stack, Jack Hobbert, Darragh, Regan Flynn and Jack Harper who worked their socks off with their tackling and some brilliant interplay to work some brilliant scores.

All in all,it was a super way to finish the last game in phase 1. We know how much work the lads have put, so we are all looking forward to phase 2 starting in a few week’ time.

Thanks again to Diarmuid Galvin the referee and all the parents and families that came to see the game. It is always greatly appreciated. Ballymac Abú

Division 3A County League v Firies

Needing a win to qualify for the county league semi final we travelled to Firies determined to collect the two points up for grabs, and the boys did not disappoint.

Dominating in most areas of the field in the first half we lead 6-07  to 1-05 at halftime meaning the second half was only a matter of keeping the scoreboard ticking over to get the result needed. In defence Eoin Moriarty led the way at centre back ably assisted by Tom Long,Conal Savage and Conor Martin with Shane Gilroy and Jack Joy working very hard in mid field. Jack Slattery was in great form at centre forward along with Mairtin Mc Kivergan, Micheal Savage and Jamie Burke. Final score was 7-13 to 2-07.

The semi-final takes place next Wednesday evening at 7pm away to Glenflesk. Best of luck to everyone.

Gold Team.

Ballymac Gold 3-04

Kenmare B 6-10

Our gold team took to the field last Tuesday evening with great confidence knowing that we had already secured a semi-final spot and we were looking for a good performance from the lads.

Kenmare started the brighter and were first to evert ball inside the first 10mins, we tried to regroup at the water break and the lads tried hard for the remainder of the 1st half to go in at HT 2-03 to 3-03 down.

Unfortunately the 2nd half was all Kenmare and they ran out convincingly winners on the scoreline of 3-04 to 6-10, hopefully our lads regain the fluid football they played before this game and try and get into the final.

Match Report: The Kellihers Toyota sponsored Central Region League.
Our U17 team did battle with a Milltown / Castlemaine team team last Monday night (5/7/21) at the pitch in Ballymac in the Kelliher’s Toyota Central Region Div 2 league.

We faced a tough opposition with a bare 15 players. Our backs deserve special mention in holding their formation against an attacking opposition and did well to concede only one gaol. Kieran Slattery had a good game between the posts. Andy Rodgers, Eoin Creedon and the Horgan twins proved their steel and denied multiple scoring opportunities.

Up front Maurice O’Connell, Niall Collins and Gary Lynch played well and between them put 5 points on the score board for Ballymac.

We were five points down at halftime but our tired legs were no match for the visiting team who ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 1- 18 to 0-5.

A special go raibh maith agaibh to Shane Gilroy and Conor Martin who joined our ranks at short notice and acquitted themselves well in the game.

County League Division 1 Round 4

Tuesday 6th July 2021

Ballymac 5-09            Scartaglen 3-06

Tuesday night the 6th of July, away in Scartaglen,  it was cold, it was wet, there was a strong wind and it was a fiercely contested local derby, in the top echelon of ladies football. This was a game that had everything penalties, goals, scintillating runs, dropped balls, high fielding, close scores and tension all the way through….in the end our young ladies dug deep and won out, after being down by 8 points at one stage.

The first quarter, Ballymac playing into a strong wind, we defended stoutly with Kate Collins breaking up a lot of the Scart attacks, ably assisted by her wings Ciara and Rachel, but we were very slow to click into gear in our forward line only scoring once from a Roisin Rahilly free. However we were only two points down at the Water Break, 0-1 to 0-3.

Scartaglen turned the screw on us straight away in the second quarter, hitting 1-3 without reply, it could have been more only for some tight defensive work by our two lady full back line(Scart played with a third midfielder)Alice and Anna, then we got a fortuitous goal from a Roisin Rahilly free and then another from Sarah Scanlon , with a point from Rachel Creedon  to leave the score at half time 1-6 to 2-2. Just down by one point after playing into the strong wind.

We went into the second half/third quarter with the wind and were expecting to really put it upto the Scart ladies, but the opposite happened with us conceding two quick goals (one from a penalty) from two poor turnovers by ourselves. Now we were under pressure again 3-6 to 2-2 down, seven points in arrears…how were we to respond….Up to the mark stepped the our hardworking midfielder Keelin  who covered virtually every blade of grass, Laura Sugrue with a point and Roisin Rahilly with a goal and two frees. Ella Quirke at this stage had taken tight control of the opposition third midfielder. Leaving the score at the end of the third quarter 3-6 to 3-5, Ballymac just one point behind and the game in the melting pot for the final quarter…

This time it was our ladies who started the quarter with a bang…Sarah Scanlon with a goal…quickly followed by two more points from frees by Roisin. Jill Quirke notched over a lovely point from play with another Laura Sugrue goal and a final point from a free by Roisin Rahilly to leave the final score 3-6 to 5-9.

Squad on the night was Aoibhinn Broderick, Kerry Hennessy, Alice Brosnan, Anna Collins, Laura Kelly, Abby Leahy, Ciara Kerins, Kate Collins, Rachel Griffin, Roisin Rahilly (2-6), Keelin Enright, Rachel Creedon (0-1), Sarah Scanlon (2-0), Ella Quirke, Emma Daly, Alexa Weiss, Ciara Palmer, Laura Sugrue (1-1), Orla O’Connor, Niamh Lynch, Jill Quirke (0-1).

MKL Gaels Gael 4-10     Ballymac 3-06

The game took place in Ballymac today Sunday 04/07/2021 at 4pm between Ballymac and MKL Gaels. The weather forecast was correct and we did have rain during the game. MKL Gaels started very well and led at the first water break by 2 goals.

Score at first water break, Ballymac 2 points to MKL Gaels 2 – 2

MKL Gaels continued to apply pressure on Ballymac and extended the lead at half time.

Score at half time: Ballymac 1 – 4 to MKL Gaels 4 – 9

There were signs that Ballymac were getting stuck into this game and won the next quarter scoring a goal more than MKL Gaels for this period. It was not for the lack of trying by MKL Gaels as the Ballymac defence was working very hard to keep MKL Gaels out.

Score at the 2nd water break: Ballymac 2 – 5 to MKL Gaels 4 – 10

Ballymac started off the last quarter feeling more confident and scored a goal fairly quickly. Unfortunately for Ballymac, Niamh Rice injured her right hand in the course of play and had to leave the field for treatment. Niamh who was having a great game up to this returned to the field a short time later and continued on with the game.

MKL Gaels were awarded a penalty but this was saved by the great goalkeeping of Debra o’Connor who had a great game overall.

In this quarter Ballymac held MKL Gaels scoreless which was a great finish for Ballymac.

Final score

Ballymac 3 – 6  MKL Gaels 4 – 10

Legion 4-07     Ballymac 3-14

Today Sunday 11/07/2021 Ballymac were at home playing Legion in the last round of the Co. League.  Ballymac got off to a great start and were 3 points up at the first water break. Score at the first water break was Ballymac 4 points to Legion’s 1 point.    Ballymac continued to pressure the Legion team in all areas of the field and this paid off. The score at half time was Ballymac 2 -08   to   Legion 0  – 03

In the 3rd quarter Legion put in a massive effort and went looking for goals and to their success scored 3 goals and 1 point in this quarter, Ballymac scored 1 goal and 3 points in this quarter.

Score at 2nd water break was Ballymac 3 – 11 to Legion   3 -0 4

In the last quarter, Legion started very well again and scored 3 points and a goal and brought them to within a point of Ballymac.

At this point the game was up for grabs however Ballymac got a second wind and scored the next 3 points to close out the match

Final score was Ballymac 3 – 14 to Legion 4 – 7

Round 4 North Kerry League

Monday 5th July 2021

Duagh 5-03 Ballymac 5-23

Ballymac went into the game in second position and aware a win or a draw would secure home advantage in the Shield Final.

Duagh arrived with fourteen players and Ballymac accommodated this by reducing their team.

Playing five at the back and five up front Ballymac moved Alice Savage to a three-person midfield. Unfamiliar to this position Alice took to her new role immediately and will be staking a big claim to this position next season.

Ballymac started well kicking five points in the opening quarter. Duagh pounced on three goal scoring opportunities and took each one with precision to their credit.

At the water break Duagh 3:00 Ballymac 0:05.

Trailing by four points Ballymac set a target to come in at half time in front.

Quickly setting about the task Ballymac kicked a goal and five points in ten minutes working hard and creating opportunities, The Duagh goalie had to make numerous point blank saves during this period of the game.

The Duagh goal scoring machine was not finished yet and pounced for two goals in quick succession in the dying minutes of the half.

Half Time score Duagh 5:00 Ballymac 1:10

Disappointed to still be trailing by two points the Ballymac girls knew if they kept kicking over points the goals would eventually come in the second half.

The girls moved up the gears from the throw in and began their fight back; collectively Ballymac kicked a whopping 4:13 and limited Duagh to 3 points in the second half.

Ballymac limiting the opposition to only eight scores on the night in what was a very competitive game is testament to a collective team effort, a very hardworking Midfield, Defence and Goalkeeper and very alert forward line.

Ballymac saw eight players get their name on the score sheet on what was a slippery wet night; this is a very promising sign and will build the confidence of these young players for the future.

Scorers on the night:

Michelle O’Connor 3:09

Molly O’Connor 0:6pts

Katie Turner 3pts

Abigail Geary 2 Goals

Alice Savage 2pts

Grace Kelly, Fiona McCarthy, and Tara Slattery (1 point each)

Final Score Ballymac 5:23 to 5:03

Next up is the Shield Final where Ballymac have now secured home advantage; details of this will be on Facebook later in the week.
