Senior Team

The Credit Union SFL Div1 Round 4: Ballymacelligott V Rathmore (23-04-23)

Twelve minutes into the second half Ballymacelligott had a three-point lead over Rathmore in this Round 4 SFL tie played in Ballymacelligott today. Rathmore clawed the lead back to a point with six minutes to go. These last six minutes plus four of injury time saw heroics from both sides and just on the final whistle, Rathmore got a goal disallowed as the player was in the square.

It was a fab day for football in Ballymacelligott today where a very warm and deserving welcome was given to Rathmore the AIB All Ireland Intermediate Champions. Prior to the game, a minute’s silence was observed for Club Member John Bermingham who passed away this week.

The first half of this game saw ten out of the fifteen scores coming from frees. Michéal Reidy and Niall Collins scored the only two points from play for the home side. Rathmore scored five points from play.  The halftime score was Ballymacelligott 0-9 to Rathmore 0-7.

Ciaran Collins with a point from a free opened the scoring for Rathmore in the second half. Aidan Breen scored two points from frees for the home side. Rathmore counter-attacked immediately and scored a point from a free once again from the boot of Ciaran Collins.  Rathmore kept the pressure up and the home side breathed a sigh of relief, to see Dan O’Shea intercept a ball and run with it to the opposition’s half-forward line where a top-class pass to Donal Daly resulted in a point.

Rathmore did not let up and were very unlucky when a ball intended for the net hit the tip of the crossbar and rebounded to be cleared by Ballymac. With fifteen minutes to go Ballymac were in the lead 0-12 to Rathmore 0-10.

John Moynihan scored two points from play to bring the East Kerry side level. In between these two points a great block-down by Niall Collins, for Ballymac, on the full-back line, ensuring they were still in the game.

The great interplay between Brian Lonergan and Tadhg Brick resulted in a fine point from Donal Daly. A block down by Brian Lonergan once again gave the advantage to Ballymac and Vinnie Horan scored their last point.

Rathmore pressed on and really piled on the pressure in these last six minutes and four minutes of added time. A point from Ciaran Collins left just one point between the teams. Christy Leen in goals cleared a goal-bound ball.  A free from Rathmore went wide. Ballymac’s Darragh Sweeney got a black card and the resultant free went wide. In the last seconds of the game, Rathmore got the ball into the net, and the goal was disallowed.

Ballymacelligott came into this game with a lot of players injured. The lads that played showed their willingness to work hard and ground out these two points with determination from the throw-in. Dan O’Shea had a mighty game as did Aidan Breen with Brian Lonergan, Tadhg Brick, and Darragh Sweeney working hard and taking charge when needed.

We play Dr Crokes in Lewis Road next.

Team and Scores: Christy Leen, Mike Sweeney, Dan O’Shea, Diarmuid Galvin, Darragh Sweeney, Tadhg Brick, Dylan Dunne, Aidan Breen (0-7 frees) Michéal Reidy (0-1) Josh O’Keeffe, Brian Lonergan, Niall Collins (0-1) Donal Daly (0-3), Michael Herlihy and Vinnie Horan (Capt.) (0-2 1f)

Minor Boys
Gold Team

Ballymacelligott v Laune Rangers– Minor County League Div 8– Final

Ballymacelligott 2-11

Laune Rangers 5-17

Our Minor Gold team played the final in the county league Division 8 against Laune Rangers on a glorious Thursday evening in Cordal.

Ballymac started this game well but Laune Rangers took command of this game mid-way through the first half and deservedly led at half time on a scoreline of Laune Rangers 3-08 Ballymac 1-06 with Jamie Burke Ballymac’s stand out player in the first half with a personal tally of 1-04 from play.

Ballymac started the 2nd half very strongly and reduced the lead to five points in the first minute of the second half with a goal from Luke Griffin that lead reduced further to three points with well taken points from Ciaran O’Connell and second half substitute Eoin Joy. Unfortunately, that was to be the closest Ballymac would get as Laune Rangers got to grips with the game again and ran out deserving winners on the night.

Well done to our boys for the effort shown on the day but on this occasion, they came up against a superior outfit with further battles expected between the two sides over the coming weeks.

A special mention must also be made to Cordal GAA who provided top class facilities on the evening for this County League Final.

A word of thanks also to Con Daly of KME Agri our very generous sponsor of the new set of minor jerseys.

Scorers; Jamie Burke (1-05) Ciaran O’Connell (0-03) Luke Griffin (1-00), Michael Savage (0-02) Eoin Joy (0-01)

Next fixture is Monday 24-4-23 Away to Dromid Waterville at 7pm in Central region Division 5

Final score Kerry 1-14 to Tipperary 1-8

U16 Girls
Our u16 Girls travelled to Ballyrickard on Wednesday evening last to take on Kerins O’Rahillys in Round 2 of the Co League.

In what proved to be a thrilling encounter between two evenly matched sides, Ballymac prevailed by 3 points.

It was the home side who made the better start with an early goal giving them the initiative, however our Girls struck three goals in this half courtesy of Katie Landers, Jill Quirke and Anna Collins to give us a half time lead 3-5 to 1-9.

The second half was again closely contested and some brilliant displays by Laura West, Sarah O Rourke, Maura Culloty and Ashlinn Baily meant we kept the Strand Road side at bay to see us claim the victory on a 3-13 to 2-13 scoreline.

Our next game sees us welcome Listowel Emmets to Ballymac on May 3rd.

U15 Boys

Blue Team

On Wednesday last, our u15 Blue team took on Stacks in Connolly Park, in our 2nd game in the County league, Div 1B.

As our 1st game wasn’t our greatest performance, a major transformation was hoped for, and boy did our lads deliver!

From the throw in, we chased, tackled, supported and really grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. We dominated all over the field and at the short whistle we had a commanding lead of 2-6 to 1-3.

The 2nd half continued as was, with some brilliant defending and quality scores on display.

The final score of a very good team performance was 3-11 to 2-6.

Gold Team

Our u15 Gold Team were in action away to Laune Rangers last Friday night, in what really turned out to be a game of 2 halves.

The 1st half was all Ballymac. We combined very well, especially up front, and kicked some wonderful scores. Credit to Laune Rangers keeper, he denied us goals on at least 2 occasions with solid keeping.

Half time score 0-9 to 0-3 in favour of Ballymac.

The 2nd half was all Killorglin. They picked up some early scores and got their goal midway through the half. We were under pressure to keep our lead, and with about 10 mins to go, the opposition took the lead and tagged on more scores to leave us 3 points behind with time nearly up.

Credit to our boys, we refused to surrender and launched 1 final attack. We got the ball into the danger area; it was looking good! But somehow, the goal we so badly needed was denied and the ref sounded the end of the game.

On a lovely evening for football, it wasn’t to be.

Final score 1-9 to 0-9 to Laune Rangers

Note: For a lot of our players, this was their 3rd game in 3 days!! Considering this, we did exceptionally well.

U14 Girls:
Well done to our U 14 girls who had a great performance against Keirns O Rahilly’s today losing out on a score line of 5 :17 to 4 :06. Had it not been for a few missed opportunities it should have been a lot closer.   Well done girls.

U13 Boys

Our boys have finished county league phase 1 but training will continue this week

Thursday evening 6.15pm to 7.30pm

U12 Girls
On Tuesday evening our under 12 girls took to the field in our 1st game of the season. Though we were supposed to be at home, an unplayable pitch meant that we had to concede home advantage and take on our opponents in Camp Community Field.

This did not phase our girls once bit.

All the girls played with great heart and determination. Good ball skills were very much on display throughout the game. What was really pleasing though, was the large panel of players we had, with each player giving their all when called upon.

The future is bright for these girls.

Captain for the game was birthday girl Doireann Broderick.

Next up is a home game v Kerins O’Rahillys on Monday at home in Ballymac at 6pm

Academy
This Sunday we had the very welcome return of the Academy to our main pitch after a few weeks of using the astroturf facilities at the MTU. We had over 100 boys and girls back on our home pitch this Sunday morning for the academy.

Huge thanks to all the coaches for their time and commitment each Sunday morning.

The club really appreciates it.

Our Under 5’s skill focus this week was on passing, building on the introduction to the hand-pass (or superhero pass!) from last week. As always fundamental movement is a major component of all our sessions and this week, we used an obstacle course and games such as “back2back”, rollerball and sharks and fishes. From the shrieks of delight, we think rollerball may be a new favourite for all the kids!

Our under 7 girls’ group are seeking some female volunteers to help out head coach Tj Casey with the girls. Two would be ideal in rotation. Please let TJ know on Sunday if you can help out.
