UNDER 16 BOYS YEAR REVIEW

Training commenced indoors in mid January and moved outdoors by early February. Through the year we played nineteen competitive games incorporating four competitions, reaching the final of three and a playoff in fourth was just reward for a remarkable group of players who’s commitment and dedication to the Club is unquestionable. To add to this remarkable achievement we were only able to field a fully fit team on just one occasion during the year.

Castleisland District was our first competition in which we had wins over Knock/Brosna, Mitchels and Desmonds while losing to Cordal/Scart in our first game of the year. We again played Cordal/Scart in the District final on a miserable wet evening in Scartaglen. Even though we were only a few points down at half time a physically stronger Cordal/Scart side pulled away in the second half to win comfortably.

Next up was the Central Region competition in which we had wins over Milltown/Castlemaine, An Ghaeltacht, drew with Desmonds and losing by the minimum to Annascaul/Lispole and Kerins O Rahillys resulted in Ballymac having a playoff with An Ghaeltacht. Playing An Ghaeltacht for a semi final spot and despite a strong second half Ballymac performance  An Ghaeltacht won by a point. Our third defeat in a row by the bare minimum ended our interest in Central Region.

A step up in training was rewarded with a fine campaign in County League Div 3A, victories away to Kilgarvan/Tousist and Spa Killarney adding to a memorable 5-13 to 5-11 win over Glenflesk and easily disposing the Mitchels in our home ties gave us home advantage and a renewed confidence for our semi final v Rathmore who finished second in Div 3B.

Having overcome Rathmore in a very tense and tenacious  home semi final we played Listowel Emmets in the  Div 3 County Final in  glorious sunshine at Connoly Park Tralee. Struggling with the pace of the Emmets forwards we found ourselves down by six points at one stage, but had it back to three points by half time.

With a few positional changes at half time this group showed their true class, resolve and character with a fantastic second half performance seeing us run out easy winners on a score line of 5-8 to 2-7. Captain Liam O Malley was presented with the winning trophy which was undoubtedly the highlight of our year.

Playing in Div 1 of the Coiste Trá-Lí league and with Kerins O Rahillys unable to fulfil their fixture we had two thrilling games against local rivals Austin Stacks and Na Gaeil. Narrowly losing to both these Div 1 teams and unable to play with the full complement of players will give this group great confidence to stay together going forward.

Thanks to Right Price Tiles, Bathrooms4u and Dulux Paints Cork for their valued sponsorship of new team jerseys and half zipped tops. We are also grateful to the parents and all those who helped and supported us over the year.

Many thanks to Roland Rogers and Martin Lowe for their contribution which had a massive influence on this group with their excellent training sessions and experienced eye on the sideline.
