IF you think you have what it takes to move from photo enthusiast to paid professional photographer, a new course based in Tralee might be the perfect place to start.

In today’s world, where every smartphone packs a high quality camera, understanding the basics of photography has never been more important for those who want to make a living from taking photos.

The National Digital Skills Centre, which is based at Kerry ETB’s Tralee Training Centre in Monavalley has just launched a new full time 16 week Photography Course which is an introduction to the world of photography and digital imaging.

Subjects covered include: Principals of Photography, Portrait, Documentary and Studio Photography, Image Editing and Image Publishing.

The focus is on hands-on, practical training that build real, usable skills. Students will learn on a variety of photo shoots and live projects that that and will start developing a portfolio that will highlight your best work.

Course instructor Jim Twomey is looking for a particular type of applicant.

“Here at the Kerry Training Centre, it’s all about getting people ready for the world of work, so we’re not looking for hobbyists or people who are figuring out how to use a new camera they received a gift. We want people who wish to establish themselves as in the photography business,” he said.

The Photography Course also offers progression opportunities onto the advanced year-long Digital Media Production course – also run at Kerry ETB’s National Digital Skills Centre. Best of all, there are no fees – but minimum eligibility criteria apply.

The course is certified by City and Guilds and training allowances are payable where applicable. It starts on April 10th – and applications are being taken now online at http://kerryetbtrainingcentre.ie/course/digital-photography/ or by calling Lynda at 066-7149638 or 066 7149600.
