THE staff at the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee, Ireland’s Private Hospital of the Year for 2014, are the most compliant in Ireland for hand hygiene, according to statistics published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

Based on figures submitted by the hospital to the HPSC for the month of June, only 2.9 percent of staff failed to wash their hands, putting the Tralee hospital at the top of the league table for compliance.

“Hand hygiene is rigorous at the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee,” said Manager of the Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee, Donna Roche. “Audit teams are multidisciplinary and validated compliance rates are over 90% for 2013. Naturally, while we are aiming for 100% compliance in this area, we are proud to be proven to be the most compliant in Ireland.”

In 2013, under the stewardship of Infection Control Clinical Nurse Specialist Mary Reidy, the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee engaged the services of Rory Kirby to produce a video in-house to promote hand hygiene.

The content of the video, only 52 seconds in duration was based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) ‘Clean Hands Save Lives’ programme highlighting exactly how healthcare professionals should wash their hands before and after becoming in contact with patients or medical equipment.

The Infection Control Team has also initiated a comprehensive programme for quality improvement which featured online training, multi media reminders including social networks and reinforcing the importance of hand hygiene via infection control link nurses at every opportunity.
