THE Castleisland-based Build4Life organisation today received €250,000 in National Lottery funding towards the funding of isolated inpatient children’s beds in Cork University Hospital, but the ward is still closed much to the dismay of the organisation

The grant comes as the Irish Examiner reports that staffing shortages are delaying the opening of the €2.3m Cystic Fibrosis respiratory ward, funded by the charity. HSE say the cause of the delay is a reorganisation of services and are unable to give a timeframe for the opening of the facility.

Build4Life is now calling on Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar to intervene to get the ward – which is fully equipped and completed since January – opened as soon as possible.

“We are now calling on Minister Leo Varadkar to launch an immediate investigation in to the failure of the hospital to open this ward and the Mental Health Unit which also lies idle,” reads a post on the Build4Life Facebook page today.

“€2,300,000 of our charity funds are lying idle…This is a disgraceful situation, our ward needs to be opened now!” reads the statement.
