CAHERLEAHEEN NS held Denim Day for Dementia, on Friday last as a fundraiser for the Alzheimers Society of Ireland.
Principal, Mary Connolly explained that “each year, in Ireland over 11,000 people develop dementia. That’s at least 30 people every day and anyone can get dementia – even people in their thirties, forties and fifties, not just our elderly loved ones and friends.”
“We wanted to help the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and to promote awareness of this disease among our pupils in a fun, gentle and child-friendly way. Children made posters and our teachers and student council led the promotion in the preceding days,” she said.

“Everyone arrived to school on Denim Day wearing big smiles, denim dungarees, denim jackets, shirts and jeans, in every shade of blue. Our weekly Dance Friday at break-times is very popular here in Caherleaheen, thanks to the wonder of Spotify. But today Neil Diamond’s ‘Forever in Blue Jeans’ went straight to No.1! We painted blue symbols on their faces and they danced through their breaks under blue skies. We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather,” said Mary.
There was great excitement and anticipation while staff and students collected, counted and bagged all the coins and notes.
The pupils announced that they had collected €460 over the intercom to huge cheers all round the school and they rounded it up to €600 by 2.30pm.
