A DAY where experienced gardeners could help out the horticulturalist in the Town Park was suggested by a councillor at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Tuesday.

Cllr Toireasa Ferris was speaking after motions by Cllr Sam Locke and Mayor Jim Finucane requested that the Council look into employing a second gardener in the Town Park.

Council management said they will endeavour to provide further assistance as and when staff are available to assist the new gardener who was appointed in June.

Cllr Ferris said there are gardeners willing and able to go into the Park for a day and under the instruction of the gardener, assist him in his work.

She said a similar event was held at St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort last year and it was incredible what was achieved in just one day.

Colm Nagle of the Kerry County Council said he would have concerns about “opening the doors” to people because they could cause damage to the plants.

Cllr Ferris said there were gifted gardeners available to volunteer their time and there could be at least 50 people willing to go in, under the supervision of experts, to carry out work.

Cllr Norma Foley asked that, if nothing else, something be done about the weeds in the Town Park as soon as possible.

Tralee Municipal District Manager, Michael Scannell, said they were undertaking a strategic plan in relation to the Town Park and that there would be a community element to this.

He envisaged that there would be dedicated spaces in the park that the community would take care of and develop in the future. The plan will be completed by the end of the year.
