THE Mayor of Tralee has called for action to be taken at national monument in Tralee, part of which he fears is in danger of collapse.

Speaking at July’s meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday, Mayor Johnnie Wall called on the Office of Public Works to shore up the back wall in theĀ old church in Rathass graveyard.

“It seems to be more like the leaning Tower Of Pisa every day. I’d hate to see anything happen to it,” said Mayor Wall.

In reply, Council management said Rathass Church is a national monument in State ownership. They had a concern about cracks which have been observed on the gable of the church and have notified the OPW.

The church has been fenced off as a precaution, pending a review by the OPW. Any action to be taken by the OPW including shoring up the gable of the Church will be subject to this review and they will seek an update from the OPW as to when this work will be carried out.

The church was built sometime in the 10th century on the site where, it’s believed, a rath or embanked enclosure may have existed there before.
