Call To Link Proposed Cockleshell-Spa Walkway To Tralee-Fenit Greenway

The proposed new greenway will run along the coastline from Cockleshell to the Spa.

THE Kerry Green Party is asking the Council to create a link from the proposed walkway from Cockleshell road to the Spa, to the Tralee-Fenit Greenway.

They have issued a submission to the Council’s planning office as part of the public consultation process for the amenity which will be a 2km extension of the Marina to Cockleshell walkway if approved.

While they welcomed the development, they said there is a significant missed opportunity to connect the new walkway to the Tralee-Fenit greenway in a safe and segregated way.

They encouraged the Council to seek a way to connect both greenways, potentially along a private laneway they have identified from the proposed walkway.

The Kerry Green Party have proposed a link (along dotted line above) which would link the new proposed Cockleshell to Spa Walkway with the Tralee-Fenit Greenway.

As it stands, the Green Party says the only connection available to greenway users will be to travel uphill at Spa from the Oyster Tavern to the Tralee-Fenit greenway along a public road.

They say this will be unappealing to most users and particularly to families with small children and people with additional mobility needs.

They claim it may also result in a loss to local businesses as trade which would generate from Tralee-Fenit greenway users has no easy way to access The Spa.

In their submission, they also say chicane barriers should not be employed at any point in the scheme and a simple bollard is sufficient to manage greenway access.

They say the chicane barriers used on the existing Cockleshell to Lock Gates of the greenway should be removed immediately as they are discriminatory,

They claim the barriers prevent bicycle access and reduce the usability of the greenway and this is particularly problematic for people who may use a mobility aid, wheelchair or electrified mobility scooter.

The deadline for submission for the new walkway is tomorrow, Friday, November 26. For more click here.
