A CANDLELIGHT vigil was held in Pearse Park on Monday night to remember those lost to suicide.

Organised by Gerard Collins, this was the sixth year of the vigil which is held to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. People gathered in the park at 8.30pm where candles were lit and there was a minute’s silence to remember loved ones and friends.

Gerard Collins welcomed those present and urged people who are in pain to reach out and get help.

“It’s a day we remember those lost to suicide, but as you know we remember them every day,” said Gerard. “Some of you have lost family recently, others have been on this path for many years. To those of who have just begun your journey, they say time is a great healer but time just helps you build a tolerance to your pain.”

He said around 900 people in Ireland will be lost to suicide this year and he said there is help there to help cope with the grief.

“Don’t try to walk the path alone. I did that for many years and it nearly killed me. I live with suicidal ideation every day and to those who understand what I’m saying, you’re not alone. Please reach out,” said Gerard.

He said Open Arms Kerry is available for people who need help. They can be contacted through their facebook page here.  After the minute’s silence, local singer songwriter Seamus Harty played a few songs for those present.
