Media Release19 January 2018TRAINING COURSE AIMS TO ENRICH LIVES OF OLDER PEOPLE IN KERRY THROUGH CREATIVITYAge & Opportunity is delighted to announce an exciting new development partnership which will see the innovative Creative Exchanges training programme delivered in Kerry for the first time, with 25 participants taking part. Creative Exchanges is a QQI accredited course for anyone leading creative activities with older people in care settings, and for those interested in working with older people. Participants develop the skills and confidence needed to plan and facilitate arts activities for older people in either residential or day care settings. This is the first time that the training will be offered in Kerry and is made possible through funding from the Department of Health and Pobal, as part of Kerry’s involvement in the Healthy Ireland plan, and with the support of Siamsa Tíre Home to the National Folk Theatre of Ireland. Creative Exchanges in Kerry will be delivered in Siamsa Tíre, Tralee over seven one-day sessions, starting on 18th January. The course brings together practitioners from different arts disciplines to discuss different approaches and to lead participants in arts activity. Those taking part will have access to Irish experts in the field such as artists Marie Brett, Tom Meskell, Gillian McCarthy, Julie Tiernan and arts educator Bairbre Ann Harkin from the Butler Gallery. Among the participants are care workers, community volunteers, HSE staff and those interested in working with older people in care settings and community groups. This new initiative will bring a whole new level of creativity into the lives of people in nursing homes and community groups in Kerry by providing the learning and development in relation to guiding creative activities in care settings. Mixing theory, regulations and practical creative work, participants will be able to bring their learning back to their own nursing home or community group, so that people can feel the benefits straight away.Speaking at the course launch Hilary Scanlan, Community Work Manager HSE commented:“We hope that programme participants will gain the skills and knowledge to enable them to deliver varied, innovative and creative programmes in their care settings and communities. It is a wonderful opportunity to stage this training in an active theatre and arts centre such as Siamsa Tíre. Through this we hope to support varied and stimulating programmes for older people’s groups and encourage active engagement in the community, promoting the vision of Healthy Ireland in Kerry.”Creative Exchanges was developed by Age & Opportunity, the national organisation that inspires everyone to reach their full potential as they age. The need for such a programme was borne out of research which showed significant benefits for older people in care who have access to the arts. Speaking at the launch, Ciaran McKinney from Age & Opportunity said:“It is so important that those organising activities for older people are skilled and confident in being able to deliver interesting, varied, person-centred activities. These activities can have a direct impact on the quality of life of an older person in care, and in the community. We are delighted that Creative Exchanges will reach new groups through this initiative". Siamsa Tíre is one of Ireland’s busiest theatres and arts centres and is home to the National Folk Theatre of Ireland, Ireland’s only remaining professional theatre company. It is honoured to host the first Creative Exchanges programme in Kerry. Dedicated to preserving and developing Irish music, song and dance, Siamsa celebrates 50 years of Irish Folk performances. It provides an extensive programme of traditional and contemporary entertainment all year round for both local and growing international audiences and runs a Training Academy to develop new talent in the Irish cultural arts of music, song, dance, storytelling and drama. The Siamsa gallery also hosts exhibitions of Irish and international artists throughout the year and offers a progressive arts programme for locals and in support of artists in Ireland. For more information on Age & Opportunity, visit www.ageandopportunity.ie or find the organisation on Facebook or Twitter (@Age_Opp)ENDSFor further press information and images please contact Anne Kearney on 086 847 9563 or email anne.kearney@ageandopportunity.ieNOTES TO EDITOR:About Age and Opportunity:Age & Opportunity is the national organisation that works to inspire and to create opportunities so that Irish people can live healthy and fulfilling lives as they age. They do this by working with other national and local bodies to provide access to a wide range of activities, events and training opportunities in arts and culture, sport and physical activity, education and active citizenshipAge & Opportunity aims to contribute to changes in attitudes and practices in relation to ageing and older people in Ireland such that as people age they can develop their full potential on three levels – the personal, the societal and the civic - to the extent that each individual chooses. This is informed by international public policy initiatives as well as research showing that participating in society is good for individual health and well-being, and good for communities through the building of social capital. Fundamentally it is also informed by the conviction that full citizenship is the right of everyone no matter what their age or background.
