The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council is asking everyone in the county to show their support for the three Kerry athletes who will participate in the Olympic Games which get underway in Japan next week.

Cllr Jimmy Moloney has extended best wishes to Killorglin rowers Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley as well as Ballyhar 20km walker, David Kenny, ahead of their participation in the Tokyo games.

‘Monika, Aileen and David will be among the over 11,000 athletes taking part in the 2020 Games which begin next Friday. It is a tremendous achievement and honour for them to participate in the most prestigious of international athletics events.

‘Kerry has a proud tradition in the Olympics stretching all the way back to the first Games in Athens in 1896 when John Pius Boland, later an MP for Kerry, won the singles and doubles tennis competition. The Kerry trio taking part in this year’s event join a great pantheon of Irish athletes who have competed at this level and can take great pride in getting this far.

‘I am urging everyone in Kerry to show their support for Monika, Aileen and David over the next few weeks by sharing messages online and by flying the Kerry and the Irish flags. They may be on the other side of the world but everyone in Kerry will be cheering them on loudly.

‘On behalf of Kerry County Council, I extend the heartiest of best wishes to our county trio and hope they thoroughly enjoy the experience. Áth mór oraibh go léir,’ said Cllr Moloney.
