CAUSEWAY Macra are getting set to host their third annual 5K/10K Fun Run in aid of Down Syndrome Kerry this Sunday.

This event has grown year on year and Causeway Macra are hoping to make this run the biggest yet.

“Last year we had over 80 runners and walkers part-take in the event and this year we are hoping to increase this number to 100 attendees,” explained club chair, John Martin Carroll.

“Over the past 7 weeks, we hosted a free Couch to 5K training programme two evenings a week, kindly led by club member Ciaran O’ Hara. We wanted to help those in the locality who were interested in beginning running and our upcoming run provided the perfect goal to aim for. We had a great response and we look forward to seeing all those who participated in the programme running a full 5K on the day.”

“We are delighted to again have Down Syndrome Kerry as our chosen charity. Down Syndrome Kerry’s goal is to help people with Down syndrome make their own futures as bright and independent as possible by providing them with education, support and friendship every step of the way. They have over 200 members throughout the county and provide much needed services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and organise social and sporting events for their members. This is a charity which is close to our club member’s hearts and we are delighted to be able to continue to support them and their work.”

Finally, John Martin wanted to acknowledge those who help make this event a success: “This event wouldn’t be possible without the continued support and sponsorship of many individuals and organisations and a massive thank you must be given to all, in particular, Harty’s Bar, Trophy World, Horgan’s Centra Ardfert, Tralee Printing, Civil Defence, Causeway Community Action Group, our club members, our walkers and runners, and all those who donate.”

Registration takes place from 11am, with the run kicking off at 12 noon outside An Tochar Adult Education Centre, Causeway.

The cost is €5 for those taking part in the 5K race and €10 for those taking part in the 10K race. There will also be refreshments in Harty’s Bar Causeway following the run. Make sure to check out Causeway Macra’s Facebook page and event for further details.
