TRALEE Chamber is calling for the development of a Travel and Mobility Plan for Tralee and for support in the provision of a modern public transport and carpark metering systems for the town.

This includes a public bus system with routes serving all the town and investment in a linked cycleway network.

“While we welcome that there’s free parking until 11am each day in Tralee, access and parking is still a cause of great frustration to some businesses of the town centre and needs to be at the forefront of all developments in the town,” said Tralee Chamber President, Kevin McCarthy.

“Modern parking systems can allow for things like flexible set-down times and first hour free parking for example. We cannot close off our town to cars if people have no other options available to them.”

Ken Tobin of Tralee Chamber said; “We have had a series of engagement with the National Transport Agency and local stakeholders, with a view to getting progress on a modern fit-for-purpose public bus system for the town. We have little choice when it comes to accessing the town centre than to use cars, and when you impact on access for cars and put in limitations and costs on car-parking spaces in the town, without giving people a viable alternative, you put in place a major stumbling block to the town’s growth.

The move in all sustainable towns is towards a European culture, but in order for this to happen it is essential we have choice and right now we don’t. We need significant investment in a linked cycleway network, full re-examination of our car-parking systems to make it more affordable, and critically a modern electric public bus fleet, with routes that serve all the town and edge of town on a regular basis,” said Mr Tobin.
