TRALEE Chamber believes the town is a prime candidate to be used in a national pilot programme to revive retail.

As part of their roadmap for economic recovery in a post-COVID Tralee, they propose a retail strategy be developed for the county capital.

A statement issued by Tralee Chamber reads; “Tralee town centre and the edge of town presents the strongest retail offering in the entire region, as a combined package.  If retail is to not only survive in this new era, but regain its presence in towns and thrive, then Tralee is a prime candidate for a national pilot programme.”

“As a town Tralee has an abundance of choice both in-town and at the edge of town in local and international brands. While there is a need to develop an overall Retail Strategy for the county, the potential for growth and employment in the retail sector in Tralee merits a dedicated Retail Strategy for the town to inform and support all future development.

Tralee has all the assets needed to be used as a case-study at a National Level and be piloted for a new form of retail revival in our towns.”

Over the past five weeks Tralee Chamber has set out ten clear proposals in the local media that seek to support the reignition of Tralee; including:

• Public Service Facilities; focused on a planned relocation of public sectors services and jobs back into vacant spaces in the town centre.
• Compulsory Sales and Amalgamations; looking to ensure long-term vacant properties are acquired and redeveloped
• Public Sector Residential development; to ensure that 40% of all residential developments occur within the town centre
• University Town Accommodation; seeking to redevelop ‘above the shop’ spaces in modern student accommodation
• Meanwhile Spaces; bringing vacant properties into temporary use and supporting animation projects in the town centre
• Increased targets and future zoning; to plan for 50% of all jobs to be created in brownfield sites in the town centre with a strategic plan to grow Tralee
• Visitor Hub for a Destination Town; to link in all the incredible tourism and outdoor assets that Tralee has to offer with the town centre
• Public Transport; supporting the provision of a suitable Public Bus system, modern parking systems and linked cycleways into the town centre
• Public Realm activation; encouraging dwell time in the town through entertainment and features to attract people to stay longer
• Planning for Retail; setting out a clear strategy to support retail development in and around Tralee as a pilot town for retail.
