Chief Supt Expresses Concern Over Assaults On Gardaí In Kerry

THERE have been 27 gardaí in Kerry injured on duty since January 2017 it was revealed at the Joint Policing Committee meeting in Kerry County Council buildings on Friday.

Kerry Garda Division Chief Superintendent, Tom Myers, said the vast majority of these incidents were assaults on garda members including being punched in the face and having blood spat in their face.

Others suffered injuries like a dislocated shoulder, back and neck injuries, broken wrist and a broken leg.

Chief Supt Myers said they are very concerned about these incidents and nearly all those cases will be going before the courts. He expressed his disappointment at the figures especially when gardaí are out doing the best they can in the community.

In general, Assaults Causing Harm incidents rose by 26% in Kerry in the first quarter of 2018 compared with the same period last year.

There were 34 incidents between January and March 2018 compared to 27 in the same period last year. Minor Assaults were almost the same with 67 in the first three months of this year compared to 66 in Jan-Mar 2017.

    Speaking as an Irish law abiding citizen.

    I would normally say protect members of any police force with a legal sentence of 5 years for anyone who assaults them and I would even support arming them.

    However, I do not trust An Garda Síochána to abuse that type of power.
