Churchill Community Churchill Community Alert Group

The Churchill Community Alert Group was set up in response to numerous incidents of burglary and anti-social behaviour in the area. Though the group is still in its infancy, the committee running it hope to expand it greatly in the coming months. Taking in the local areas of the Spa, Kilfenora, Fenit, Talaught, Churchill, Barrow, Sliabh and Knockanish, it hopes to attract members across the entire parish and encourage people to report any suspicious activities they might see. Gardai from Tralee Garda Station have already been assigned to liaise with the group.

The group has set up a Community Text Alert System, which has been a proven success throughout many parishes across the country. The text system helps to prevent crime by warning people of the threat of suspected criminals in the area. It helps strengthen the sense of community in the area and it helps lessen the sense of isolation felt by people living alone by letting them know that there is a community of people around who cares. It increases communication between the Gardai and the local community. The Text Alert System works very easily.

If any member of the community sees anything at all suspicious, they can ring the Gardai in Tralee, in confidence, on their 24 hour phone line 066 7102300. The Gardai then contact our server company, who send a text message of the suspicious activity to all those who have registered on the Text Alert System, within 3 minutes. The Group, in collaboration with Kerry County Council, have erected numerous road signs in strategic locations across the Spa-Fenit-Barrow community.

These show that there is a Text Alert System in operation and it also gives the Tralee Garda Stations number to ring if you see any suspicious activity. Please take note of this number. These signs will help deter criminals in the area. So far, up to nearly 70 people have registered, and the group hopes to reach out to every household in the local area, making them aware that the group is up and running. Numerous other projects will be looked at in the future by the group, with the overall aim to increase safety and health of the communities residents.

The Churchill Community Alert Group is comprised of Chairman John O’Sullivan, Secretary Mike Moriarty, Committee Members Toireasa Ferris, John Williams, Trevor Lawlor, Ciaran Moore and Liam Griffin. If you would like to join the text alert system, or for any other information, you can contact a member of the group.

A public meeting of the above committee will take place on Thursday night the 5/06/2014 in the hall in Fenit @ 8.30p.m.Persons from Fire Services, Lifeboat and Garda Crime prevention will give talks on the night. New and existing members are expected to attend.

Birthday Celebrations: There were birthday celebrations for Anna Moore, Talaught, Fenit last weekend, where Anna was joined in her home on Saturday afternoon by her family, some coming from near and some from as far as Australia, Edinburgh, Dunmore East and Dingle. Happy Birthday Anna and continued health and happiness!

It was with deep regret and sadness that we learn of the death on Friday morning of our very popular Scor officer Tommy Brosnan. Tommy excelled in a number of positions in the club over the years including secretary, p.r.o. and County Board delegate.

But it was as Scor officer over the last 9 years that he really excelled bringing many titles to the club. Winning County titles with the novelty group, coaching Padraig Walsh to a Munster title, but the crowning of all was this year when the club won the All-Ireland Quiz title.

Even going through a serious illness, he attended scor in Ballymacelligott in March. A huge crowd attented the wake on Saturday evening, removal on Sunday and burial on Monday.

A big thank to all who help with parking over the weekend. A huge guard of honour was provided by the club, drama group, teachers and cyclists.
