Seniors: Churchill 0-09; NA Gaeil 0-11. Churchill were narrowly defeated by Na Gaeil in the St Brendan’s League on Sunday morning at a cold and breezy Churchill pitch.

Despite the defeat, the Churchill management can take a lot of positives from the team’s display and the desire they showed throughout the contest.

NA Gaeil were two points up before Churchill opened their account with an Ivan Parker free, quickly followed by a lovely Jack Dolan score. The teams then exchanged points, Churchill’s coming from the left leg of Mixer O’Brien, but a little indiscipline led to three Darragh Carmody points in a row for the visitors, all from frees.

Churchill started to gain control in the middle of the field helped by strong displays from some of our younger players including Kevin O’Connor, Jason Mortimer, Jack Dolan and Sean Donnellan.  Parker had a fine effort tipped over the bar by Na Gaeil ‘keeper Eamonn O’Neill as Churchill finished the half strongly and two more late scores from Mixer and Ivan saw the teams take the half time break level at 6 points apiece.

A Mixer free straight from the restart gave Churchill the lead for the first and only time in the game.

Four Na Gaeil points, interrupted by a single Jason Mortimer score for Churchill opened up a 2 point lead for the visitors.  JJ Prior reduced the lead to a single point, but as we pressed forward into the wind in search of the equaliser Na Gaeil broke to grab the last score of the game and ensure the victory.

It was a good display from a youthful Churchill side against Division 1 opposition and will give confidence for the games ahead.
