A TRALEE Municipal District councillor has called for action after what he called a rat infestation in parts of the Mitchels area of town in the past few weeks.

Independent Councillor Sam Locke raised the issue at Monday’s meeting of Tralee MD councillors. He said he contacted the Environment Section in Kerry County Council, who then referred him to the HSE.

Cllr Locke said he had yet to hear back from the HSE after contacting them a week ago. Cllr Locke believes the rat infestations were as a result of demolition and road development work in the area which disturbed the rodents.

He said a number of houses in various estates in the Mitchels area were affected and they had to hire Rentokil to deal with the issue. The Council said they would look into the issue.

Sinn Féin Cllr Deirdre Ferris said rats were also a problem at the Greenway between Rock Street and Bracker O’Regan Road, while her party colleague, Cllr Cathal Foley, said the increase in the rat population was a problem all over the country and not just in Tralee.
