TRALEE Sinn Féin councillor Pa Daly has said the publication of the FAI’s 2018 accounts showing net liabilities of €55million are absolutely shocking and a kick in the teeth for the grassroots of the organisation.

Cllr Daly, who is involved with the Tralee Dynamos club, said ordinary grassroots members throughout Kerry will also be dismayed at the severance package of €462,000 paid out to former CEO John Delaney.

Speaking this afternoon Cllr Daly said; “It’s a sad day for people who have put a lot of time and effort into supporting and promoting the game in Kerry and have followed the national team and what we have seen is absolutely shocking and worrying for the future of the organisation.

“The FAI now has financial liabilities of €55 million and was operating a negative cashflow at the end of 2018. The auditors were unable determine whether adequate accounting records have been kept and were unable to report if, in their opinion, the disclosure of directors’ remuneration and transactions specified by law were made. Serious questions remain on who knew what.

John Delaney.

“All of this is an indictment of the former CEO John Delaney and makes a mockery of his repeated claims that the association would be debt free by 2020.

“Ordinary decent fans who have supported the game throughout good times and bad will be dismayed at the revelation that former CEO John Delaney received a severance package of €462,000.

“It looks inevitable that there will now be job losses at the association. Those who are responsible for this mess must be the first to lose their jobs rather than those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to promote the game every day. It’s absolutely shameful that this catostrophe has been allowed to happen to the game many of us love,” said Cllr Daly.
