A LOCAL councillor has asked that something be done about the parking and traffic situation at O’Rahillys Villas, which he described as being “awful”.

Speaking at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District councillors last week, Cllr Terry O’Brien said O’Rahillys Villas is an old housing estate which is being used as a ring road.

“It’s awful in the middle of O’Rahillys Villas. There are big trucks going through there every day and there’s an accident waiting to happen,” he said.

He said the ‘Respect Residential Parking’ signs were having no effect, as non-residents were ignoring them and parking there at certain times.

In reply, the Council said the road there forms part of the 2020 Restoration Improvement Programme.

It is proposed to allocate €76,000 to improve the road pavement, inclusive of ramps and €35,000 on prioritised sections of footpaths within the area.

  1. It is about time and the parking should be permit only and monitored by traffic wardens who can fine non-residents who frequently park and go into town.

Cllr Terry O’Brien the permanent solution for all these 1930’s/40’s residential estates like O’Rahillys Villas, St John’s Park and the Old Marian Park is available.

Kerry County Council should allocate residential parking spaces, clearly marked parking space with the number of the house the parking spaces are assigned too. Just, provide one parking space to each house and that would elevate a lot of stress for the communities of these areas.

Of course, if the allocated parking space is located directly in front of the residents house when possible, and if that resident had a driveway – they would control access and hence would be able to park a second car in the driveway too and if possible it is only common sense to do so.

Kerry County Council could retain ownership of the parking spaces and had have some terms and agreements put in place to safeguard their interests.

I feel this is not a big deal to permanently solve this issue and Kerry County Council could and should be more proactive and supportive towards the local residents of Tralee town.

A bit of Public Service please!
