Cllr Deirdre Ferris.

A LOCAL councillor has called for a cycle lane from Ardfert to link up with the proposed Tralee to Listowel greenway.

Sinn Féin Cllr Deirdre Ferris made the call at the online meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday.

She wants the Council to construct a cycle lane from Ardfert along Station Road to link the Tralee to Listowel Greenway to Ardfert village and Banna.

Cllr Ferris said it was vital that smaller towns and villages near the proposed greenway would be accessible and hoped cycle lanes would link them all together.

She said it would make it safer for people to deviate off greenways into villages so they could benefit from the tourism amenity.

In reply, Council management said any links can be examined during the design stage and if feasible included in any application for future funding.

The Tralee to Listowel Greenway is currently at the Environmental Screening Stage which is expected to be completed in the next fortnight.

This will determine the appropriate planning mechanism to be followed. Once this has been completed and the current restrictions relaxed, the next stage is the public consultation phase and completion of the scheme design and cost estimate.
