Cllr Norma Foley wants a pedestrian crossing in the Princes Street area.

A TRALEE councillor said more needs to be done to help people with disabilities and mobility issues when it comes to facilitating them in being able to cross the roads safely in Tralee.

Cllr Norma Foley had a motion before the Tralee Municipal District on Monday, that provision be made for a pedestrian crossing somewhere on the road between the local shops and the Tralee Municipal District Offices on Prince’s Quay.

The Fianna Fáil councillor said it is virtually impossible to safely cross the road between these two points and especially around Counihan’s and Hussey’s shops.

She said a similar situation is ongoing on the Oakpark Road at the Oaklands Daybreak/Leahy’s Pharmacy and the only pedestrian crossing in the area is close to The Meadowlands Hotel. Cllr Foley said people, particularly those with mobility issues, were finding it particularly difficult to cross the road there.

Cllr Foley also said pedestrians only had about seven seconds to cross from the lights at the railway station across two lanes to Edward Street and this wasn’t acceptable.

She said a more imaginative approach needed to be taken by the Council with regard to facilitating people with mobility issues at junctions and busy traffic areas in Tralee.

In reply to her motion, the Council said the Tralee MD offices are located approximately 200m from an existing controlled pedestrian crossing point located at the junction of Godfrey Place/Prince’s Quay & Ivy Terrace and that providing additional controlled pedestrian crossing facilities within this short distance would have a significant impact on the capacity of the road.
