TRALEE MD Councillor, Mikey Sheehy, has called for a tax rebate for over 70’s who find themselves cocooning during the COVID19 pandemic.

“Over 70’s who find themselves cocooning under HSE and government advice should be offered a retrospective car tax rebate if their vehicle is off the road during the cocooning period,” said the Fianna Fáil cllr.

“Options are available to car owners who wish to declare their vehicles off the road at any time, but these may not be readily available to people cocooning at the moment. People may not have access to www.motortax.ie and the option to visit the motor tax office is unavailable to them.”

“Everything possible should be done to make this process as easy as possible for this group and that is why I am asking for a retrospective rebate which can be calculated once the cocooning period has passed,” he said.

Councillor Sheehy welcomed the proactive approach from the Government so far, but said that more could be done for over 70’s who now find themselves isolated from their families and communities.

He has contacted Deputy Michael McGrath, Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Finance, and the Department of Transport.
