A TRALEE councillor wants something done about a junction on the outskirts of town, which he described as dangerous for motorists.

Labour Councillor Terry O’Brien had a motion before the Tralee Municipal District meeting earlier this month that  Kerry County Council look at the junction linking to the Kerries road and examine if any safety measures can be put in place.

He said it was difficult for cars, approaching from the direction of Ballyvelly to the junction to see oncoming vehicles from the Kerries side travelling towards town. He said they “are on top of you before you know it” and asked that that something be done.

The Council, in reply, said they undertook works there in the recent past and these work were maximised in the context of lands available at the time.

A land search will be carried out as land acquisition would be required to improve sightlines further at this junction. The Council will approach the relevant landowners to determine if the necessary lands are available by agreement.

Subject to positive landowner engagement, an estimate for the cost of the works can be prepared and the project will be considered for submission for Safety Improvement Works Funding when submissions are next sought by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

The photo on this article just shows how little importance is placed on road safety by the Government and Kerry County council. Look at the lack of clear road markings and what is the purpose of the pole on the left of the photo. I assume that is supposed to have a STOP sign. Only in Ireland could the powers that be get away with such reckless lack of responsibility for failure to carry out their basic functions correctly. A car accident waiting to happen.
