KERRY Recreation and Sports Partnership, in recognition of the success of Age and Opportunity’s ‘Go For Life Games’ programme, hosted a specific ‘Coach the Coaches’ pickleball coaching day on Monday at John Mitchel’s GAA Club in Tralee.

Pickleball is an exercise which makes for a great social outlet for older people. Combining elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis along with using modified tennis rules, pickleball offers the older person an opportunity to participate in sport played on a court like a badminton court with a paddle as opposed to a racket.

According to Jimmy Deenihan, Chairperson of Kerry Recreation and Sport Partnership; “Exercise is good at any age but is especially important as we get older and pickleball offers another opportunity for older people to stay active as well as having fun while learning a new skill”.

The aim of the coaching day was to train up as many people as possible in order to be able to introduce pickleball to Kerry.  According to KRSP Programme Facilitator Debbie Quirke.

“The day was very successful with 25 participants attending and representative of 11 groups.  As 2020 approaches, we at Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership plans to provide an opportunity for the older people of Kerry to experience pickleball in a variety of locations, via our public leisure centres and supporting our counties active retirement groups.”
