A TRALEE councillor has asked the Council and local businesses to work together to solve the problem of overflowing rubbish in the general Abbey Car Park area in town.

Cllr Norma Foley had a motion before Tralee Municipal District meeting of Kerry County Council on Monday, that the Tralee MD address the current situation where refuse bins and black refuse bags are placed in a public space, often overflowing with rubbish in the area. The area is used by some people to illegally dump their household waste on top of or next to the commercial bins.

Cllr Foley said the issue is ongoing for years and said she would like to see the businesses in the area sit down with the Council and work out a solution, as the appearance of the area is not the image the town would like to portray to tourists or the townspeople.

In reply, the council said they are aware of the issue highlighted and it is the intention of the Environment Department and the Tralee MD to engage with the Tralee Chamber Alliance and other relevant parties to identify a sustainable alternative for the storage of the bins etc at this location.

They said while it is their intention to work constructively with the parties involved, primary responsibility for the proper management and storage of waste in this instance rests with the business owners in question.
