COMMUNITY workers in Kerry were on the picket line in Tralee today, on strike for better pay.

Trade union SIPTU is calling for a pay increase and more protection for the services they provide. The workers provide vital services, caring for the vulnerable and have been on the same rate of pay since 2008.

Fórsa members were striking outside Enable Ireland Adult Training Centre in Edward Street, Tralee today from 9am to 5pm.

SIPTU say most of the workers received pay rises linked to public service agreements until 2008. Since then, the organisations for which they work, which are reliant on government funding, have not received increases to their grants which allow them to maintain this link.

They are calling on the Government to engage with the workers’ unions and discuss how to return to a system of linking the workers’ pay to movements within public service pay.
