A DUBLIN-BASED company has begun drilling for oil off the coast of Kerry.

The company estimates that there could be as much as 3.2 billion barrels of oil at its Druid location.

Providence has contracted a deep-water drillship called the Stena ’IceMAX’ to drill the well at a depth of more than 2km. Drilling operations are expected to last between 45 and 60 days.

In a statement released yesterday, the exploration company said that consent from the Minister of Communications, Climate Action and Environment to commence drilling operations had been received on July 11, 2017.

Providence said that an update will be provided once the Druid prospect has been penetrated or as appropriate.
