THE construction of nearly 90 social housing units at Lohercannon is set to start before the end of 2024.

At last week’s meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council, Mayor of Tralee Cllr Terry. O’Brien asked that the Council would give the members an update on the proposed new development in the Lohercannon area, which will be situated next adjacent to the Cluain Láir estate which opened in late 2022.

Council management said on foot of the secured funding approval, work has been ongoing on the second phase of this proposed housing development which will consist of 89 new homes.

The proposed scheme includes the construction of 44 one-bedroom apartments, 15  two-bedroom apartments, 10  two-bedroom houses, five three-bedroom duplex units and 15 three-bedroom houses and all associated siteworks including site clearance, site enclosures, drainage, site services and both hard and soft landscaping.

In terms of location, it is directly behind and to the north of the first phase of the scheme. Archaeological investigation works are scheduled to commence shortly which will involve activity on the site such as stripping of topsoil and assessing the exposed excavations.

It is intended that Phase 2 of the development will enter the Section 179A planning procedure shortly. A briefing meeting for MD members will be held prior to the Public Notice period.

Subject to planning and departmental approval and in the absence of any delays or challenges the development may commence on-site construction by years end.
