15 houses are to be built in a site off the Mitchels Road.

KERRY County Council  signed a contract for the construction of 15 new housing units at the Mitchels Road, Tralee on Monday morning.

The development, which is the latest in a series of new housing construction schemes in the county, represents the next phase in the wider regeneration and redevelopment of the Mitchels-Boherbee area of Tralee.

M Fitzgibbon Contractors Ltd of Ennis, Co Clare will construct 11 terraced, two-and-a-half-storey homes and four detached units over the next 18 months at a cost of €3.3million.

The 11 two-and-a-half-storey houses will be built in a crescent shape opposite the eastern end of Áras An Phobail, consisting of four four-bedroom housing units, and seven three-bedroom units.

The other four new homes provide permanent accommodation for residents from the area who are temporarily re-housed elsewhere.

This new development is the first phase in the opening up the rest of the 0.34 hectare brown field site – part of the former demolished Mitchel’s Crescent estate – for redevelopment. The site will facilitate the construction of dwelling units, community facilities, and the link road from Mitchel’s Road to Cróilár Na Mistéalach, in line with the Regeneration Master plan.

The contract was signed at Áras an Phobail in Boherbee by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea, Deputy Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Norma Foley, and Council Chief Executive, Moira Murrell. They were joined by Martin, Susan and Michael Fitzgibbon representing the contractors.

In 2008, the Mitchels Boherbee Community Regeneration Project Master Plan was approved by the Department of the Environment and Local Government and a revision to the plan was further approved in 2016.

The Regeneration Plan has three major pillars: Infrastructure, Social, and Economic, under which the various elements are designed and developed.

The Infrastructure projects include the new homes now being constructed in conjunction with the government’s Rebuilding Ireland programme.

Welcoming the signing of the contract, Deputy Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Norma Foley said the additional housing units represented another welcome step forward in the regeneration of the wider Mitchels-Bohebee area of the town.

“I am delighted to see this latest element of the rollout of Kerry County Council’s house-building programme in conjunction with the Department of Housing and the Rebuilding Ireland programme. I look forward to the completion of the project as soon as possible,” said Cllr Foley.
