KERRY County Council is encouraging people in the county to shine a light for road safety on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims this Sunday.
The campaign, in memory for all of those who have lost their lives on our roads, will see council buildings across Ireland lit up from 7.00 – 8.00pm as part of this years ‘World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims’, Sunday 15th November.
Kerry County Council will light up Aras an Chontae, Rathass, Tralee and ask you to join them and ‘light up for road safety’ by shining a light or lighting a candle in your windows at the same time.

How can you get involved?
• Set a reminder on your phone to shine a light in your window from 7.00 PM – 8.00 PM on Sunday, 15th November.
• Spread the word and ask friends and family to do the same.
• Take a moment to remember the lives lost and those who have been injured, and to be appreciative of your own health and well-being.
• Check that your family has high vis jackets and torches for your walks and cycles.
• Never take road safety for granted.
The Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, first held in 1993 in the United Kingdom and organised since then by non-governmental organizations in a number of countries, was created as a means to give recognition to victims of road traffic crashes and the plight of their loved ones who must cope with the emotional and practical consequences of these events.
On October 26, 2005, the United Nations adopted a resolution which calls for governments to mark the third Sunday in November each year as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
Observation of this day provides an opportunity to draw the public’s attention to road traffic crashes, their consequences and costs, and the measures which can be taken to prevent them.
World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims is commemorated on the third Sunday in November each year.
On this important day, bereaved families and the seriously injured come together to acknowledge the terrible toll of road deaths and injuries and to show thanks for the work of the emergency services, you too can show your support by participating in this event.
