The view people would enjoy while picnicking near the Lock Gates.

IT’S probably the best spot for walks in the Tralee area and now the Council is looking to attract more people there.

Cllr Tom McEllistrim called on the Tralee Municipal District to identify an area for the public to hold picnics in Tralee town and its environs at the meeting of the Council on Tuesday.

While it’s true that people hold their own picnics in the town park, out by Blennerville bridge or in other scenic parts to the Tralee area, an official area with benches has now been identified.

It’s at the green area adjacent to the Lock Gates at Lohercannon. A plan will be drafted and a costing will follow. Thereafter a source for funding will have to be found.

The area does command incredible views of Tralee Bay and the mountains stretching out to west Kerry.

The car park there had a makeover in November 2014, while earlier this year the final stretch of the canal walkway out to the lock gates was tarmacadamed.

Tis a very beautiful place for the tae and ‘hang’ sandwiches alright! Can you think of anywhere else in the town environs that would have made a better picnic spot?

  1. I can’t. Hopefully people keep it as 100 percent clean and litter free though. Lovely spot.

We don’t make use of our seafront. Other counties have done more with less seafrontage .lmagination – vision. ???

  3. Good idea Ger, maybe unique design seating furniture?

Also the walkway Tralee town to Blennerville isn’t the safest for pedestrians. Sanctuary walkway is good. Could more be done for road one?
