KERRY County Council’s Severe Weather Management Team met this morning to continue preparations for the impact of Storm Lorenzo on Thursday and Friday, in the wake of Met Éireann issuing a Status Orange wind warning for Kerry.
With gusts generally of 100 to 130km/h, higher in coastal regions, and storm surges likely to produce coastal flooding and damage, the Severe Weather Management Team is asking members of the public to heed the advice and information provided by Met Éireann and the National Emergency Coordination Group as well as local agencies.

• Securing items or property which are susceptible to high winds such as hoarding, signage, garden furniture, bins, trampolines and other items which are outdoors.
• For the duration of the severe weather event, motorists should take extreme care on all roads and be mindful of the strong likelihood of debris, fallen trees and branches, and fallen power lines, particularly during Thursday evening and early Friday morning.
• Members of the public should avoid coastal areas as there is a significant risk of flooding and damage in coastal areas because of a high sea swell. Met Éireann has advised that Storm Lorenzo will produce significant swell, high waves and sizeable storm surges. This will lead to wave overtopping, some coastal flooding and damage, especially along western and southern coasts.
• Waterways Ireland has advised all owners of vessels berthed in public harbours, jetties and moorings to take precautions and this advice should be heeded

There is also a meeting underway this afternoon of the Kerry Local Coordination Group which includes representatives of senior management of Kerry County Council, An Garda Síochána, and the Health Service Executive to oversee a multi-agency response to the storm.
