Kerry County Council is advising residents and visitors to Kerry to be prepared for high winds and severe weather conditions, as Met Eireann has issued an Orange Weather alert due to Storm Ellen.

The Status Orange Wind Warning is valid from 9pm Wednesday night to 6am Thursday morning, and will bring severe and damaging winds.

While all areas of the county are at risk, a combination of storm surge, high spring tides and onshore winds may result in a potential risk of coastal flooding.

The Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team is currently meeting, while Council crews are making preparations and will be on standby to assist.

Residents and businesses are asked to secure all loose items, including garden and street furniture, refuse bins, hoardings, signage and any other items that could potentially work loose during the storm and become dangerous.

In particular, visitors in campsites and holiday homes are being advised to take extra precautions to secure caravans, camping equipment and any other loose items.

Road users are also advised to minimise their journeys during this time and be aware of road conditions if travelling, particularly in relation to flooding and debris on the roads.

An Emergency Telephone Line is in place from 9pm this evening to 9am tomorrow morning for any Storm Ellen-related emergencies. Tel: 066-7183588.
