Councillor Calls For Urgency In Relation To Feasibility Study Into Covering The Square

A TRALEE councillor has called for the feasibility study relating to a canopy to cover The Square to begin as soon as possible.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Johnnie Wall made the request at the meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday. He said it started raining during the recent reception held in The Square to welcome the Roses during the festival and this highlighted the need for a canopy.

In reply, the councillor was told that Kerry County Council submitted the ‘Tralee Regeneration Project’ proposal under Call 2 of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund in June 2020 with a feasibility study into the provision of a cover to the Tralee Town Square part of this overall proposal.

Preliminary approval for the Tralee Regeneration Project was granted by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in September 2021.

As required under the Public Spending Code – Kerry County Council submitted a Preliminary Business Case in March 2022.

This business case is currently being reviewed by the Department. Kerry County Council are awaiting approval from the Department to proceed to the next project stage which will involve the development of a detailed project brief and procurement strategy.
