A COUNCILLOR is to put forward a motion that Kerry County Council move to establish a twinning arrangement with the US city of Philadelphia.

Fine Gael Cllr Pat McCarthy believes it would be beneficial to establish such links from an economic and tourism perspective. He said there is a large Irish community in the city’s metropolitan area and that Kerry is accessible through American Airlines direct flights from the American city to Shannon.

The Ballymacelligott man said Kerry already has a similar arrangement with the Zhejiang Province in China after Kerry County Council signed a memorandum of understanding with officials there.

This has helped develop links with schools and the IT Tralee with staff and student exchanges, while Kerry Group established a manufacturing facility in the province 11 years ago.

Cllr McCarthy said he met with members of the Irish community and politicians from the ‘City of Brotherly Love’ while he was there as Mayor of Kerry for the St Patrick’s parades. He said there was a great deal of enthusiasm expressed about a potential arrangement.

The councillor’s motion comes before the meeting of Kerry County Council on Monday.
