CONCERNS about the speed of vehicles near a local school were expressed by councillors at the online meeting of Tralee Municipal District on Tuesday.

After being contacted by Spa residents about the problem, they both called for traffic safety measures to be taken as a matter of urgency.

Cllr Sheehy said there is a lot more traffic on the road now and he has witnessed cars speeding through the are so they need to progress the measures.

Cllr Sam Locke said that because of the Tralee-Fenit greenway development, there will be a higher footfall in the area and something needs to be done for their safety.

In reply, the Council said that in 2015 they undertook a survey of the section of road in the vicinity of Spa National School to see if a pedestrian crossing was warranted and they found it was not.

They said it was unlikely that the need for a crossing would have changed significantly in the past six years, however, Tralee MD will undertake to complete another survey of the area to verify the current demands.

The Council has secured funding for the completion of road improvement works at Cuckoo Lane which will include for the extension of footpath facilities between Spa Seafoods and Spa Village Cross inclusive of the provision of a Toucan Controlled Crossing of the R558.

The likely location of this controlled crossing point will be approximately 300m to the east of the school and these works should be completed by the end of 2021.

Tralee MD have reviewed the lining and signing in the vicinity of Spa National School and will undertake to relocate the Driver Feedback Sign located to the west of Spa Lodge Cross to a point to the east of this cross and in advance of Spa National School thereby improving the effectiveness of this sign on driver behaviour and speed through the village.
