The Tralee Arterial Cycle Network Plan.

THE Kerry Cycling Campaign is asking local councillors to support a plan to build a cycle network in Tralee.

Anluan Dunne wrote to the councillors on behalf of the campaign regarding the development of cycling infrastructure in the town and the creation of a Tralee Arterial Cycle Network Plan.

“With the current government’s commitment to funding active travel, we can and should take hold of this opportunity and build a broad, connected and cohesive cycle network in Tralee,” said Mr Dunne, who is also Chairperson of the Kerry branch of the Green Party.

He said a proper cycling infrastructure would be good for local business, increase property values, is relatively cheap and quick to install, environmentally responsible and reduces air and noise pollution.

“We have produced a draft map of suggested routes. All of these routes should have segregated cycle lanes installed,” he said.

“On road painted cycle lanes are dangerous and should not be used anywhere. The routes proposed are deliberately low on detail as the finer points need more input to inform the design. The NTA are willing to provide expert assistance to the Council to develop a cycle network plan,” he continued.

“With the sensitivity in the town centre to changes of this nature we are suggesting dealing only with arterial routes at present. This approach has the added benefit of immediately improving our roads and streets near residential areas, schools and businesses on the periphery of the town,” said Mr Dunne.
