DARREN Mullery, who made national news last year with his inspirational video showing him fighting cancer, lost his battle with the disease this morning.

He died surrounded by his family at his home in Ardfert.

Darren was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late 2013, but battled with dignity and bravery against the disease. There was joy though amidst the pain when his daughter Noelle was born in December 2013.

Last summer, his friends in Tralee Musical Society helped him make a video showing him battling the disease.

In the video ‘Fighting Cancer, Darren’s Way’, Darren rises out of his hospital bed, goes to a gym where he has a boxing match and ends up at home with wife Danielle and Noelle, all to the tune of ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ from the movie ‘Rocky III’ movie.

The video went on to be viewed over 120,000 times providing inspiration to many battling cancer and Darren was interviewed by many radio stations and newspapers about it.

Speaking to TraleeToday.ie last June after the video premiered in the Kerins O’Rahilly’s clubhouse, Darren told us about the support he received from family and friends.

“You couldn’t ask for a better bunch of friends in the world. My wife has been very supportive. She couldn’t wait to get involved and we got my daughter into the video as well. It’s something she’ll have in the future to look back on. She was only five months old but she was helping her daddy,” said Darren at the time.

On their Facebook page, Tralee Musical Society paid tribute to Darren.

“It is with the dearest sympathy and a heavy heart that I write this post as our fighter Darren has lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Darren has been a member of Tralee Musical Society over the last 20 years and has been a true talent, inspiration and above all a tremendous friend to absolutely everyone in the society…Your amazing personality, witty humour and smiling face will be forever missed by us all.

You’re our fighter, our legend and our hero. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all his family and friends especially his wife Danielle and little baby Noelle. Your battle is now over may you find peace our angel and sleep tight forever. Love always, your pals at TMS xxxxx”
