IT wasn’t your typical retirement send-off but then again, nothing about the past nine months has been anything like normal.

The staff and pupils of Holy Family said farewell to the caretaker of the past 28 years on Tuesday afternoon as they broke up for the holidays.

David Diggins from The Kerries has been a stalwart at the school for decades and a tribute from  Principal Ed O’Brien in front of socially-distanced staff members in the school yard had to do as a ‘farewell party’ due to COVID restrictions.

He said it was hard to quantify how much work David did on a day to day basis and he was always on hand to solve any problem.

Mr O’Brien said he was especially grateful for David’s help since the pandemic and all the preparation work that needed to be completed before welcoming pupils back safely to the school.

Mr O’Brien said Dave was free now to devote more time to his family and “his beloved West Ham United”. On behalf of all the staff and management, he wished David a “long, healthy and successful retirement” and thanked him for everything he had done for the school.

Speaking afterwards, David said Holy Family was a fantastic place to work over the years.

“It was brilliant, a super place to work. I was involved in all sports with the kids over the years — basketball, soccer, football, you name it. The staff were just fantastic and I’ve had great times here,” said David.

David is married to Tina and has three sons, Darren, Damien and Daniel, while he also has three grandchildren so he’ll have plenty time to spend with them now.

A longtime West Ham United fan (since 1964!), he also has plans to get over to see his beloved Hammers play sometime in the future…once the pandemic situation is over.
