The Denny Street site.

THE Denny site was described as being treated “like an unwanted Christmas present” such is the lack of action at the property at Monday’s meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council.

Cllr Pa Daly (SF) made the comment after Cllr Norma Foley asked Management if there was any update on the development of the two and a half acre site which was given to the local authority by Kerry Group back in February of 2014.

Council Management in reply said they are currently examining the planning and legal requirements in relation to the demolition and disposal of materials from the site.

Once planning approval is received they hope to tender for these works.

Cllr Foley (FF) said there was huge interest in the site among the public as to what will go into the area and that they should be involved more with the process.

Cllr Toireasa Ferris (SF) said the Denny site was more of a long-term project and that Tralee already has a location in town that could be utilised now in The Square.

She said some sort of enclosure should be erected in The Square to make it an all-weather facility where special events could be held.

Other towns developed similar facilities said Cllr Ferris and for a small amount of money, some kind of cover for part of the Square could be secured.

She suggested to Mayor Tom McEllistrim that he should try to secure funding for this enclosure facility during his tenure.

Cllr Daly said he hoped that whatever happened on the Denny site would benefit the people of the town and that he would hate to see millions spent on getting the site ready for a multi-national retail corporation to move in.

Cllr Pat McCarthy (FG) suggested advertising in the local media for submissions for use of the Denny site and also said some of the site should be considered for public/private partnership venture.

Cllr Jim Finucane (FG) said it was a great chance to maximise the potential of the site for the good of the people of the town and whatever is developed must attract young and old.

Cllr Spring (Lab) agreed and said there should be a think tank with all interested parties including the public, architects and businesspeople of the town to decide on the best use for the site.
