OVER 300 people took part in the St Pat’s GAA Dingle Bay Challenge on Sunday.
The walk across mostly beach from Cloghane to Blennerville went off very well for both the club and participants.
“We’d a great day with over 300 walkers, which is up about 60% on last year and most of them were from outside the county. So we’re bringing a lot of business and tourism into the town,” said Club Chairman James Costello.
“It was tough also, the stages were mostly on the beaches and the last stage up in the mountain, but it was great,” James said.
“For two stages the weather was very good, but we had a lot of rain on the last stage which made it tough for people, but they really enjoyed the challenge,” he added.
Entry for the walk was €35 and for that participants got a full breakfast from Spillane’s in Maherees followed by lunch as they made their way along the beaches of West Kerry. At the finish line entrants were treated to a burger in St Pat’s clubhouse in Blennerville plus a goodie bag worth €15.
“We raised a lot of money for the club and we had Minister Jimmy Deenihan down here too. I spoke to him about a grant for an astro turf pitch in Blennerville so the money we raised today will go towards that,” James said.
“We’re hoping to get that done in the next year or so if we can get approval for the grant,” he added.
Afterwards, many of the walkers enjoyed a barbecue and music session back at Quane’s.
